92_SR0456 LRB9217113BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Charles R. "Chuck" Schofield of 4 Bartonville, who passed away June 9, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield was born August 22, 1939, in 6 Peoria to Charles E. and Margaret J. Thornton Schofield; he 7 married Bonnie L. Payne on April 8, 1961, in East Peoria; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield was elected Peoria County sheriff 9 in 1994 and reelected in 1998; he was set to run unopposed 10 for a third term this year; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield began his career as a jail officer 12 with the Peoria County Sheriff's Department in March 1972; he 13 later became a deputy, working patrol until he was appointed 14 to the detectives division; he was promoted to sergeant, then 15 lieutenant; Mr. Schofield served as the work-release 16 coordinator, with later assignments to supervise the 17 detectives division and the juvenile, crime scene, and 18 records departments; and 19 WHEREAS, In 1983, Mr. Schofield became interim director 20 of the Multi-County Narcotics Enforcement Group, directing 21 the undercover drug buying operations of up to 15 agents in 22 six counties; in June 1983, he was named director of the 23 Multijurisdictional Enforcement Group (MEG), serving until he 24 retired from the sheriff's department in 1991; and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield then worked for the State 26 Department of Public Aid as chief of the division of 27 investigations; in 1993, he transferred to the Illinois River 28 Valley Correctional Center in Canton, where he was 29 administrative assistant to the warden; and 30 WHEREAS, A graduate of Illinois Central College with a 31 degree in police science, he attended the Police Training -2- LRB9217113BHbh 1 Institute at the University of Illinois and numerous 2 departmental classes; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield was a member of the American 4 Correctional Association, the American Jail Association, the 5 Illinois and National Associations of Chiefs of Police, the 6 Illinois Sheriffs Association, the Peoria and Tazewell County 7 Associations of Chiefs of Police, and the International 8 Narcotic Officers Association; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield was a Marine Corps veteran with 10 the rank of corporal; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield was a Mason and a member of the 12 South-West Kiwanis, Bradley Chiefs Club, the Illinois 13 Auctioneer Association, and the American Quarter Horse 14 Association; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield served on the Central Illinois 16 Police Training Board, Mobile Training Unit; he served on the 17 Domestic Violence Protocol 10th Judicial Circuit Board, the 18 Easter Seal Advisory Board, the Emergency 9-1-1 Board, the 19 Governor's Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Council, the 20 Illinois Central College Peoria Campus Advisory Committee, 21 the Illinois State Police Regional Laboratory Advisory Board, 22 the Juvenile Justice Council, the Peoria Alternative Charter 23 School Board, the Peoria SAFE KIDS Coalition, the Peoria 24 County/City TRIAD Board, the Peoria County Visitation Center 25 Steering Committee, the Youth Farm Board, the Center for 26 Prevention of Abuse Leadership Council, and the Illinois MEG 27 Directors Association; he also served as chairman of the MEG 28 Board; and 29 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield's awards include the U.S. 30 Department of Justice Public Service Award, the Glasford 31 Optimist Deputy of the Year, the Illinois State Police 32 Narcotic Enforcement Award, the Harold Brignadello Award from -3- LRB9217113BHbh 1 the Peoria County Association of Chiefs of Police, and the 2 2001 Outstanding Service Award from Lions International; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Schofield will be deeply missed by all those 4 who knew him and loved him, especially his wife, Bonnie; his 5 daughter, Shelly (Michael) Gobert; his granddaughter; his 6 mother and stepfather, Margaret and Joe Rank; his brother, 7 Richard (Debbie); and his stepsister, Carol Jo (Tom) Hazlett; 8 therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 10 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 11 his family and friends, the passing of Charles R. "Chuck" 12 Schofield; and be it further 13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 14 presented to the family of Charles "Chuck" Schofield with our 15 sincere condolences.
