92_SR0425 LRB9216819RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of 4 Mary Jo Hoover McGann, who passed away on April 25, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mary Jo Hoover McGann was born on May 28, 1921 6 in Milton, Illinois, to Mary Meserve and Fred Gilbert Hoover; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, After attending Milton High School for three 9 years, Mrs. McGann moved to Pittsfield; she graduated in 1940 10 from Pittsfield High School, where she met her future 11 husband, George Edward McGann, who preceded her in death in 12 1989; after high school she went to work at the Brown Shoe 13 Factory in Pittsfield as a bookkeeper and married George 14 McGann on January 25, 1943; she was a member of St. Mary 15 Catholic Church in Pittsfield; and 16 WHEREAS, Family was the essence of Mary Jo McGann; 17 together with her husband she devoted her life to her family; 18 and 19 WHEREAS, Creative through and through, Mary Jo McGann was 20 one of Pittsfield's finest dressmakers and seamstresses; she 21 designed and created the prom and wedding gowns for each of 22 her daughters; in addition, she made her wardrobe and the 23 formal clothing for her husband and children; she had a 24 unique skill to look and study a garment and then create her 25 own version; and 26 WHEREAS, In 1988 Illinois Democratic Chairman Vince 27 Demuzio named Mrs. McGann a Special participant to the 1988 28 Democratic Convention; Special Participants choose a 29 replacement for the presidential and/or vice presidential 30 nominees if they leave the ticket before the election; in 31 addition, she was a veteran of the Altar Society, PTA, a Cub -2- LRB9216819RHrh 1 Scout Den mother, and a member of many other local 2 organizations; and 3 WHEREAS, Mary Jo McGann had a wry and wonderful sense of 4 humor, a strong sense of grace, honor, and duty, a powerful 5 sense of place and history, and a deep courage and common 6 sense found only in this part of the world; she had a large 7 and varied repertoire of rural wisdom and sayings, such as 8 "Trot mammy, trot pappy, how do you expect the colt to 9 pace?"; one of her favorites and most used sayings was "A job 10 worth doing is worth doing well"; and 11 WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Jo Hoover McGann will be 12 deeply felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her 13 children, Mary Margaret (Mark) Dal Pozzo, G. Michael McGann, 14 James McGann, Kathleen McGann, Patrick (Jennifer) McGann, and 15 David McGann; her grandchildren, Margaret Flynn (Fred) Robb 16 LaVigne, Christopher (Amy) McGann Robb, Ryan McGann, and 17 Colby McGann; her great-grandchild, John Mark Robb; her 18 brother, Paul "Bill" Hoover; and her sister, Frances Snider; 19 therefore, be it 20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 22 all who knew her, the death of Mary Jo Hoover McGann of 23 Pittsfield, Illinois; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to the family of Mary Jo Hoover McGann with our 26 sincere condolences.
