92_SR0419 LRB9216723BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, According to recently released statistics, 231 3 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were 4 killed in the line of duty nationwide in 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, Such figures represent a 53 per cent increase in 6 the number of peace officers killed in the line of duty from 7 2000; and 8 WHEREAS, The National Institute for Occupational Safety 9 and Health has determined that a deputy sheriff or police 10 officer has the second highest risk of being murdered on the 11 job; and 12 WHEREAS, Often, the dangers and risks that peace officers 13 are subject to in order to protect the freedom of the 14 citizens of this nation are overlooked; and 15 WHEREAS, By Act of Congress, May 15th of each year is 16 National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the first Sunday in 17 May is the Chicago Police Department's St. Jude Police League 18 Memorial March; and 19 WHEREAS, The nation pays tribute to the federal, state, 20 and local law enforcement officers who have paid the supreme 21 price of their lives at a National Law Enforcement Officers 22 Memorial in Washington, D.C., with blue and gray marble walls 23 displaying the names of more than 15,000 officers killed in 24 the line of duty since 1792; and 25 WHEREAS, In 1990, the State of Illinois completed a 26 memorial to honor law enforcement officers who made the 27 supreme sacrifice of behalf of the people of Illinois, with a 28 six-foot-tall statue of male and female law enforcement 29 officers atop a seven-foot-tall, six-sided base; and 30 WHEREAS, In 2000, the City of Chicago dedicated the Gold -2- LRB9216723BHbh 1 Star Families Memorial Park along Chicago's lakefront, with 2 460 trees planted, one honoring each Chicago police officer 3 killed in the line of duty; and 4 WHEREAS, The Cook County Board of Commissioners has 5 designated May 10 as Peace Officers Day of Remembrance and 6 Recognition in Cook County to provide a lasting memorial to 7 all peace officers killed in the line of duty within Cook 8 County and to pay tribute to those who currently serve in 9 such positions; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we hereby remember 12 and honor the memories of all peace officers, whether they be 13 sheriffs, correctional guards, police officers, or any other 14 such service officer killed in the line of duty, and do 15 recognize and appreciate the dedication of those who 16 currently so serve by designating May 10th as Peace Officer 17 Day of Remembrance and Recognition in Cook County, Illinois, 18 beginning in the year 2002, and each year thereafter; and be 19 it further 20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 21 presented to the Co-Chairmen of the Cook County Peace Officer 22 Memorial Foundation, Edward T. Sajdak and Jason H. Watson.
