92_SR0383 LRB9216554BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Mila V. Nolan of Chicago, who passed 4 away March 20, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan earned her bachelor's and master's 6 degrees from DePaul University, preparing to be a music 7 teacher during the 1940s; she volunteered as a "grey lady" 8 for the American Red Cross during World War II, doing support 9 services at the Fifth Army Hospital in Chicago; and 10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan married attorney Barney J. Nolan on 11 November 12, 1949; they spent thirty-five happy years 12 together before his death; Mr. and Mrs. Nolan were the proud 13 parents of Col. Brian Thomas Nolan, M.D.; and 14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan began her teaching career at CVS 15 (Chicago Vocational) High School in the late 1940s; after a 16 sabbatical after her son was born, she taught at Morgan Park 17 High School in the late 1950s; the Nolans moved to the city's 18 Northwest Side in 1959, and she began teaching at Taft High 19 School, where she stayed until her retirement in 1985; during 20 her years there she directed the award-winning Girls' Chorus 21 and was a member of the advisory committee which planned the 22 Taft addition in the early 1970s; and 23 WHEREAS, Upon her retirement, Mrs. Nolan was asked to 24 write a column for the Edgebrook-Sauganash Times Review 25 newspaper to bridge the various parts of the Northwest Side's 26 Edgebrook area; she continued to write her "Bridging 27 Edgebrook" column until the week of her death; and 28 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan became very active with many 29 community groups through her involvement with writing the 30 column; she served more than three years on the Wildwood 31 School Local School Council as a community representative; -2- LRB9216554BHbh 1 she was a past president of the Edgebrook Woman's Club, and a 2 member of the Portage Park Woman's Club; Mrs. Nolan was 3 completing her year as president of District 7 of the 4 Illinois Division of the General Federation of Woman's Clubs; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan was one of the first woman members of 7 the Logan Square Lions Club and a member of the Jefferson 8 Park Lions Club; and 9 WHEREAS, Mila Nolan supported many arts endeavors and was 10 a member of and volunteer for the Lyric Opera Guild for many 11 years; she volunteered in the 1960s for the Evanston 12 Historical Society at the Dawes House; and 13 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nolan was a long-time volunteer for the 14 American Cancer Society; she headed the Edgebrook Sauganash 15 Unit in the late 1980s, and served on the board of the 16 subsequent Northwest Unit for several years; and 17 WHEREAS, Among other organizations in which she 18 participated on the boards were the Northwest Action Council, 19 the 41st Ward Democratic Women's Organization, and the North 20 Edgebrook Civic Association; 21 WHEREAS, Mila Nolan will be deeply missed by all those 22 who knew her and loved her, especially her son, Col. Brian 23 Thomas (Betty) Nolan; her grandchildren Melissa and Steven; 24 her sister Sylvia Duba; and her many nieces and nephews; 25 therefore, be it 26 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 27 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 28 her family and friends, the passing of Mila V. Nolan of 29 Chicago; and be it further 30 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 31 presented to her son, Brian Nolan, and to Anne Lunde of the -3- LRB9216554BHbh 1 Edgebrook-Sauganash Times Review with our most sincere 2 condolences.
