92_SR0359 LRB9216365RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Helen Hoosman, who passed away on February 18, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hoosman was the third daughter born to 6 Willie and Virginia Andrews on February 18, 1932, in Scooba, 7 Mississippi; and 8 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hoosman attended Blues Chapel Episcopal 9 Church and the local elementary school in Scooba, 10 Mississippi; and 11 WHEREAS, In 1944, Mrs. Hoosman moved to East St. Louis, 12 Illinois to live with her sister, Lottie Foster; she enrolled 13 in East St. Louis Senior High School, where she graduated in 14 1951; in addition, she became a member of the Wesley Bethel 15 United Methodist Church; and 16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hoosman worked as a housekeeper in 17 Belleville before being hired by the East St. Louis School 18 District 189 food service department; during her 26 years of 19 service, she worked as a cook, head cook, coordinator, and as 20 an assistant director of food service; and 21 WHEREAS, Over the years Mrs. Hoosman was involved in 22 local politics; she served as an election judge, participated 23 in committees for political affairs, and campaigned for 24 numerous candidates; in 1995, she received the first Unsung 25 Hero/Heroine award from the East St. Louis Dr. Martin Luther 26 King Jr. Drum Major awards program; she was a Top Ladies of 27 Distinction Extraordinary Mother and Orchid to Role Model 28 award recipient; she was a Crusader Mother-of-the-Year and 29 honored by the East St. Louis Home Study Club and the 30 National Council of Negro Women; she also received the Wesley 31 Bethal United Methodist Church "Did You Know You Are My -2- LRB9216365RHrh 1 Hero?" award for appreciation for the work she has done for 2 her church ministries; and 3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hoosman found her greatest joy in taking 4 care of her family and friends; she will be remembered for 5 the warmth of her home, where no one was a stranger and for 6 her love of music and conversation; and 7 WHEREAS, The passing of Helen Hoosman will be deeply felt 8 by all who knew and loved her, especially her daughters, 9 Dorene C. Hoosman, Anita McDonald, Lee Ola Johnson, and 10 Gwendolyn Jones; her son, Hubert N. Hoosman, Jr.; her 11 sons-in-law, Charles McDonald, Sr., Alan F. Johnson, Kyle 12 Jones, Phillip Blandon, and Kenneth Anthony; her 13 grandchildren, Charles McDonald II, Steven Blandon, Camille 14 Hoosman, Daniel Anthony, Justin Jones, and Hubert Hoosman 15 III; her great-grandchildren, Ava Renee Hoosman, Christian 16 McDonald, and Jordan McDonald; her 6 stepchildren; her 21 17 step-grandchildren; her aunt, Alice Backstrom; her uncle, 18 Charlie Malone; and her may other relatives and friends; she 19 was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hubert Hoosman, 20 Sr. and her daughter, Ava Anthony Blandon; therefore, be it 21 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 23 all who knew her, the death of Helen Hoosman of East St. 24 Louis, Illinois; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 26 presented to the family of Helen Hoosman with our sincere 27 condolences.
