92_SR0356 LRB9216386BHbhA 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Herschel B. Stover of Oswego, who 4 passed away February 21, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Stover was born October 5, 1923 in Chicago; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Stover married his childhood sweetheart, 8 Jean C. Meyer, on October 26, 1941; they celebrated 48 happy 9 years together before her death in 1989; from this marriage 10 two children were born, Constance and David Stover; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Stover enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 12 1943 and served as a B-25 tail gunner in the Pacific Theater 13 during World War II; and 14 WHEREAS, Shortly after his discharge as a Marine on 15 December 15, 1945, Mr. Stover joined the Aurora Police 16 Department; in 1956, Mr. Stover became the second Aurora 17 police officer to graduate from the FBI training academy in 18 Washington, D.C., and was the department's only detective for 19 five years after completing his training; and 20 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Mr. Stover worked in 21 nearly every division of the police department, including 22 patrol, investigations, crime prevention, records and 23 communications; he was known as a "policeman's policeman"; he 24 retired from the department as a lieutenant in 1975; and 25 WHEREAS, In 1991, Mr. Stover married Norma Wilcox 26 Zentmyer of Oswego; they enjoyed their years together, 27 starting a Rubber Art Stamp business, restoring a Victorian 28 home in Oswego, and taking many day trips throughout the 29 State of Illinois; and 30 WHEREAS, Mr. Stover's proudest moment was seeing his only -2- LRB9216386BHbhA 1 son, David Stover, sworn in as Aurora Police Chief in 1991; 2 he was very proud of his son and the positions he held, going 3 through the ranks, becoming chief and then Mayor of Aurora; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, Herschel Stover will be deeply missed by all 6 those who knew him and loved him, especially his wife, Norma; 7 his two children, Constance Stover and Mayor David (Karen) 8 Stover; his grandchildren, Kimberly Shanholtzer Johnson, 9 Kristine Shanholtzer, Kent Shanholtzer, and Jennifer (Rob) 10 Jordan; his great-grandchildren, Brandon and Andrew Johnson, 11 Ryan and Nicholas McKenzie Jordan, and Miranda Shanholtzer; 12 the children of Norma Wilcox Stover, Tom (Linda) Adkins, 13 Teresa (Ronald) Cudzewicz, and John (Glenda) Adkins; her 14 grandchildren, Jamee, Beth, Sarah, and Paul Adkins, Stacey 15 Adkins, Jeremy, Johathan, Jordan, and Ania Cudzewicz; and her 16 great-grandsons, Devin Macclietto and Mitchel Adkins; 17 therefore, be it 18 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 19 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 20 his family and friends, the passing of Herschel B. Stover; 21 and be it further 22 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 23 presented to the family of Herschel B. Stover with our 24 sincere condolences.
