92_SR0215 LRB9210752RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Alderman Lorraine L. Dixon was called home to 3 our Lord on Friday, June 29, 2001, following a long battle 4 with breast cancer; and 5 WHEREAS, Alderman Dixon committed herself fully to the 6 causes that defined and shaped her character and gave her 7 strength to fight for fairness, justice and equality; and 8 WHEREAS, Alderman Lorraine Dixon was the first woman to 9 serve as President Pro Tempore of the Chicago City Council; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, She was first appointed Alderman of the 8th Ward 12 by Mayor Richard M. Daley in June 1990 and easily won 13 election in 1991 and won reelection both in 1996 and 1999; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, A deeply committed and effective elected 16 official, Lorraine Dixon was known for her graciousness, her 17 hard work, and her concern for all of the residents of the 18 City of Chicago; and 19 WHEREAS, Lorraine Dixon was a staunch member of the 20 legendary 8th Ward Regular Democratic Organization, who 21 credited her advancement to her friend and mentor, Cook 22 County Board President John Stroger, and the many supporters 23 and friends she had in the 8th Ward; and 24 WHEREAS, Her life was one of many firsts, including 25 serving as the first woman to head the City Council Committee 26 on the Budget and Government Operations; and 27 WHEREAS, Alderman Dixon was the fifth child and the only 28 daughter born to Edwin and Edra Godwin; and 29 WHEREAS, She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Edra Godwin, 30 and her two brothers, Edward Godwin, Jr., and Eddie Godwin; -2- LRB9210752RHrh 1 therefore, be it 2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we send our heartfelt 4 sympathies to the family of Alderman Lorraine Dixon with the 5 knowledge that Alderman Dixon touched many lives with her 6 kindness, her commitment to public service and her dedication 7 to the residents she served; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to the family of Alderman Lorraine L. Dixon with 10 our deepest condolences.
