92_SR0195 LRB9209693REcd 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Our community has recently suffered the loss of 3 an individual whose legacy is one of compassion, activism, 4 humanitarian causes, and love for his family and his 5 community; and 6 WHEREAS, The Reverend Dr. Wilfred Reid, presiding elder 7 of the Northern District of the Chicago Conference of the 8 African Methodist Episcopal Church, was called home to our 9 Lord, on August 2, 2001; and 10 WHEREAS, As a community, we mourn his loss, along with 11 his family, but know in our hearts that he has gone home to 12 his reward; and 13 WHEREAS, He was renowned as one of the most aspiring and 14 charismatic ministers within the African Methodist Episcopal 15 faith, and he was also known as a humble, hardworking man 16 dedicated to serving people; and 17 WHEREAS, As a graduate of Roosevelt University, Reverend 18 Reid earned a master's and a doctorate of divinity from 19 Garrett Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1952; and 20 WHEREAS, Dr. Reid served as pastor at Grant Memorial 21 A.M.E. Church, on Chicago's South Side, and also served as 22 pastor at St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, on Chicago's West Side, 23 from 1964 to 1985; and 24 WHEREAS, Reverend Reid also built strong congregations at 25 Bethel A.M.E. Church, in Evanston; Allen Chapel A.M.E. 26 Church, in Galesburg; and Bethel A.M.E. Church, in Muscatine, 27 Iowa; and 28 WHEREAS, Dr. Reid recognized and addressed the needs of 29 the community throughout his career; and -2- LRB9209693REcd 1 WHEREAS, During his 21 years at St. Stephen A.M.E. 2 Church, Reverend Reid was the driving force for the 3 development of St. Stephen Terrace; and 4 WHEREAS, He pushed for an 80-unit senior housing complex 5 while pastor at Grant Memorial A.M.E. Church; and 6 WHEREAS, His community work included posts outside the 7 church, including serving as a Chicago Board of Education 8 member, as president of the Chicago Chapter of Operation 9 PUSH, as a member of various boards, including the Chicago 10 Urban League, Martin Luther King Boy's Club, Midwest 11 Community Council, Chicago City Colleges, Malcolm X College 12 and DuSable Museum; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Reid's blessings of family were many and his 14 circle of friends bountiful; and 15 WHEREAS, He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dr. 16 Loretta Reid; his sons, Paul and Stephen; his daughters, 17 Lorna and Patricia; and nine grandchildren; therefore, be it 18 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 19 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend our deepest 20 sympathies to the family of the Reverend Dr. Wilfred Reid; 21 and be it further 22 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this preamble and 23 resolution be presented to his family, with our sincere 24 condolences.
