1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of Vern Spong of Peoria, Illinois, who passed away on March
5 23, 2001; and
6 WHEREAS, Vern Spong was born in Kingston Mines on March
7 1, 1910; his parents were Grant and Bertha Lanan Spong; on
8 May 19, 1931 he married Ruby Wagner in Peoria; and
9 WHEREAS, Vern Spong was a patrolman for the Peoria Police
10 Department for thirty-one years; during this time he served
11 as an accident investigator, a police photographer, and a
12 mounted policeman; he retired from the Peoria Police
13 Department in 1972; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Spong was a veteran of World War II, serving
15 in the United States Navy on shore patrol in Stockton,
16 California; he was a member of American Legion Post 466; and
17 WHEREAS, Vern Spong will be deeply missed by all his
18 family and friends, especially his wife, Ruby; his sister,
19 Opal Kling; and his nephew, Robert (wife, Penny) VanNorman;
20 therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
23 his family and friends, the death of Vern Spong of Peoria,
24 Illinois; and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
26 presented to the family of Vern Spong.
