92_SB1239 SRS92S0016JMbm 1 AN ACT respecting certification of teachers. 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 3 represented in the General Assembly: 4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing 5 Section 21-26 as follows: 6 (105 ILCS 5/21-26) (from Ch. 122, par. 21-26) 7 Sec. 21-26. Teacher education trend and certification 8 studies. The State Board of Education in consultation with 9 the State Teacher Certification Board shall: (a) conduct a 10 study and analysis of teacher education trends in Illinois 11 which shall include (i) the number and traits of students 12 entering the study of education, (ii) the number and majors 13 of persons completing education degrees, (iii) the number, 14 distribution and fields of assignment of persons receiving 15 placement in Illinois teaching positions, and (iv) a four 16 year projection of areas of teacher placement shortages or 17 excesses; (b) conduct a review and reassessment of current 18 certification categories and analyze the necessity for 19 upgrading or otherwise revising the provisions of this 20 Article and the rules promulgated pursuant thereto; (c) study 21 and consider the advisability of requiring a fifth-year 22 internship for certification, giving particular emphasis to 23 the likelihood of improving the quality of education, the 24 effect on the caliber of students entering the education 25 field, the role of student teaching, the implications 26 concerning reciprocity and increased financial costs as a 27 result of a fifth-year internship requirement; and (d) report 28 to the General Assembly on or before March 1, 20021986with 29 their findings, analyses and recommendations concerning each 30 of the matters and things described in parts (a) through (c) 31 of this Section. -2- SRS92S0016JMbm 1 (Source: P.A. 84-126.)
