92_SB0939 LRB9204223RCcd 1 AN ACT in relation to the Office of the Attorney General. 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 3 represented in the General Assembly: 4 Section 5. The Attorney General Act is amended by adding 5 Section 6.6 as follows: 6 (15 ILCS 205/6.6 new) 7 Sec. 6.6. Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit 8 (a) The General Assembly finds that the health, welfare, 9 and prosperity of each Illinois citizen and the public's 10 interest in adequate protection against domestic violence and 11 sexual assault or abuse require effective public 12 representation by the Attorney General to protect against 13 domestic violence and sexual assault or abuse. For that 14 reason, there is created within the Office of the Attorney 15 General a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit. 16 (b) The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit 17 consists of assistant attorneys general appointed by the 18 Attorney General, who, together with any other staff deemed 19 necessary by the Attorney General, may on behalf of the 20 people of the State intervene in, initiate, enforce, and 21 prosecute any legal proceeding or matter relating to domestic 22 violence and sexual assault or abuse if the Attorney General 23 determines that the action is necessary to promote or protect 24 the rights and interest of any Illinois citizen. 25 (c) The Attorney General may support prosecution efforts 26 by assisting county State's Attorneys regarding domestic 27 violence and sexual assault or abuse. 28 (d) The provisions of this Section are not intended to 29 conflict with the duties of the Attorney General under the 30 Sex Offender Management Board Act or with the 31 responsibilities of the Attorney General under the Illinois -2- LRB9204223RCcd 1 Violence Prevention Act of 1995, but the Attorney General 2 under the provisions of this Section must serve to promote 3 and achieve the aims and objectives of the Sex Offender 4 Management Board Act and the Illinois Violence Prevention Act 5 of 1995. 6 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January 7 1, 2002.
