92_HR1165 LRB9218440KFkf 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives learned with great sadness of the death of 4 Reverend Charlie Murray of Chicago on December 10, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Reverend Murray was born to George and Lovie 6 Murray on May 16, 1922 in Parkin, Arkansas; he received his 7 early education in the public schools of Parkin, Arkansas; he 8 later moved to Detroit, Michigan and then to Chicago where he 9 remained until his passing; and 10 WHEREAS, He was employed by the National Tea Company, 11 United States Steel, and the Northern Trust Bank; in 12 addition, he was the proprietor of a grocery store and 13 restaurant; and 14 WHEREAS, Reverend Murray was a noted singer, and sang 15 professionally in a number of venues; he was called to the 16 Ministry and ordained in 1952, and was called to Pastor the 17 Southern Baptist Church of Chicago which was later renamed 18 the New Galilee M. B. Church, where he labored for 48 years; 19 he studied at the Moody Bible and Chicago Baptist Institutes, 20 and received his Doctor of Divinity Degree from the McCormick 21 Theological Seminary; he retired from the pastorate on 22 January 20, 2001; and 23 WHEREAS, He was actively involved in a number of 24 organizations; he was President of the Westside Ministers' 25 Coalition and a member of the Operation PUSH Ministers' 26 Alliance, Broadcast Ministers' Alliance, and the Midwest 27 Community Council; he was a Board member of the Loretta 28 Hospital; Chaplain, Chicago Police Department; Chaplain, St. 29 Jude's League; 33rd Degree Mason, Prince Hall Masonic Temple; 30 and Deputy Sheriff for the Cook County Sheriff's Department, 31 State of Illinois, Facilitator, 15th Police District CAPS 32 Ministerial Group; and -2- LRB9218440KFkf 1 WHEREAS, Reverend Charlie Murray will be sadly missed and 2 he leaves a legacy of involvement and concern that will long 3 inspire the citizens of this State; and 4 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by all who knew 5 and loved him, especially, his wife, Laura; his son, Charles 6 Jr. (Janice); his four daughters, Ruby Reed-Ruff (Albert), 7 Shirley Newsome, Patricia Hymon, and Stephanie James; his 8 nine grandchildren, James Hymon, Valencia Jenkins, Petite 9 Butler, John Reed, Tracy Reed, Patrice James, Jeffrey James, 10 Charles Murray II, and Joseph Murray; his six great 11 grandchildren, Naquitta Dent-Murray, Jamal and Donovan Hymon, 12 Alyssa Butler, Joseph James, and Taylor Jackson; his 13 great-great granddaughter, Nylah Dent-Murray; one 14 goddaughter, Hannah Valentine; and a host of other relatives 15 and friends; and 16 WHEREAS, Reverend Murray was preceded in death by one 17 son, Kim Kendall; and one grandchild, Glenn Carey-Murray; 18 therefore, be it 19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 20 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 21 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Reverend Charlie 22 Murray and extend our sincere condolences to his family and 23 friends; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to the family of Reverend Charlie Murray as an 26 expression of our sympathy and regret.
