1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives would like
3 to congratulate Daniel Joyce, of Chicago, for his brave and
4 quick action of May 18th, when he quickly alerted White House
5 security officers and the United States Secret Service about
6 the presence of an individual who, unbeknownst to White House
7 guards, illegally jumped over the White House fence and
8 charged up the White House lawn, where he was subsequently
9 arrested; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Joyce heeded the call of President George W.
11 Bush, who in the wake of the tragic terrorist events of
12 September 11th, called on citizens of the United States for
13 extreme vigilance against the illegal acts and threats to
14 national security; and
15 WHEREAS, Mr. Joyce was in our nation's capital with his
16 family on the weekend of May 19th to celebrate the graduation
17 of his daughter, Peggy Elizabeth, who graduated Magna Cum
18 Laude, from Georgetown University Law School; and
19 WHEREAS, Mr. Joyce visited the White House at 1600
20 Pennsylvania Boulevard with his family on Saturday, May 18th,
21 and was in the front of the White House with his daughter
22 Peggy in the afternoon; and
23 WHEREAS, While enjoying the view of the President's home,
24 Mr. Joyce took notice of a suspicious man who was leaning on
25 the fence to the front lawn of the White House; Mr. Joyce
26 keenly kept an eye on this individual, who was 25 yards away
27 from a White House Security Guard house leading to the White
28 House; to the shock of Mr. Joyce, his daughter Peggy, and
29 many bystanders, the suspicious individual lifted himself up
30 over the White House fence and onto the White House lawn; and
31 WHEREAS, Upon seeing this individual jump over the White

1 House fence, Mr. Joyce leaped into action; as the individual
2 began walking up the White House lawn, Mr. Joyce quickly
3 evaluated the situation and ran to the White House Security
4 Guard house, yelling as he ran, and immediately notified the
5 White House Guards and Secret Service Officers about the
6 intruder; and
7 WHEREAS, The White House Security Guards and Secret
8 Service Agents, upon being notified by Mr. Joyce, immediately
9 charged toward the man and quickly detained and arrested the
10 intruder; the arresting officers and guards then thanked Mr.
11 Joyce for his quick and valuable assistance; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we congratulate Daniel Joyce for his brave and alert action
15 in notifying White House Security Guards and Secret Service
16 Agents about an intruder to the White House lawn, and are
17 grateful for his action on behalf of his country that may
18 have prevented an illegal act at the White House of the
19 United States; and be it further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to Daniel Joyce as an expression of our esteem.
