92_HR0946 LRB9216951RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of Illinois' citizens; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Jane Atlas 6 Schwalbach is retiring after a distinguished 33-year career 7 at New Trier High School; and 8 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach received her B.A. in English and 9 Secondary Education from the College of Liberal Arts and 10 Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 11 1968, and her M.A. in English from the University of Chicago 12 in 1969; and 13 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach began her career at New Trier 14 West High School in 1969, where she taught English and 15 English history for 16 years; she moved to New Trier East in 16 1986, where she taught another 16 years before concluding her 17 career at the newly-opened New Trier Northfield in 2001; and 18 WHEREAS, During her career, Jane Schwalbach sponsored 19 Folio, New Trier West's literary magazine and chaired many 20 important initiatives including the Writing Across the 21 Curriculum Committee, International Baccalaureate Study 22 Committee, and others; in addition, she sponsored the 23 Interact Club; and 24 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach has demonstrated a life-long 25 love of learning by attending workshops, seminars, and 26 university courses every summer throughout her career, 27 including Renaissance Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, 28 Archeology at the Oriental Institute, African Art and 29 Artifacts at the Field Museum, Biography and Legend at 30 Northwestern University, India and China at the University of 31 Chicago, Media Literacy at Harvard University, and American -2- LRB9216951RHrh 1 art at the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and 2 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach's passion for scholarship 3 resulted in her designation as a Fulbright Scholar, which 4 enabled her to study in India in 1997; and 5 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach received the 2001 Outstanding 6 Teacher Award from the University of California, San Diego; 7 she was nominated for the Outstanding Teacher Award from the 8 University of Chicago in 1997, received the special 9 achievement award from the One-To-One Learning Center in 10 1996, and has made numerous presentations to the National 11 Council of Teachers of English; and 12 WHEREAS, Jane Schwalbach has two daughters, Rebecca and 13 Margaret; therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we congratulate Jane Atlas Schwalbach on her retirement after 17 a 33-year teaching career at New Trier High School and honor 18 her for her distinguished career in educating children of the 19 State of Illinois; and be it further 20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 21 presented to Jane Atlas Schwalbach as an expression of our 22 esteem.
