92_HR0939 LRB9216911BHgcA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The citizens of Christian County will celebrate 3 the 100th anniversary of the Christian County Courthouse on 4 October 12 and 13, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, The boundaries of Christian County were founded 6 in 1839 and established as Dane County, in 1840 it was 7 renamed to Christian County, the first courthouse became 8 famous (and has been restored at the Christian County 9 Historical Society) as Abraham Lincoln devoted nearly half of 10 each year to traveling the Eighth Judicial Circuit to 11 Taylorville in Christian County; and 12 WHEREAS, The second courthouse was built on the site of 13 the current courthouse in 1856 at a cost of $13,526, it was 14 recognized prior to 1900 that a larger courthouse with better 15 vaults was needed, the current Christian County Courthouse 16 was completed on September 20, 1902 at a cost of $100,535.80; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, The Christian County Courthouse is located in 19 the center of the Taylorville downtown square; it is 117 feet 20 long, 90 feet wide, 3 stories tall, and includes a tower with 21 a clock, a bell, and an internal stained glass dome; and 22 WHEREAS, The Christian County Board has approved a 23 "Courthouse Preservation Fund" to renovate the third floor, 24 the first project is the restoration of the dome, and, 25 through contributions from community leaders and other 26 individuals, the elegance of the stained glass dome will be 27 restored and dedicated during the celebration of the 100th 28 Birthday of the courthouse; and 29 WHEREAS, Prior to the celebration, the contents of a time 30 capsule placed within a corner stone of the courthouse will 31 be removed, placed on display, and then reburied with a new -2- LRB9216911BHgcA 1 time capsule; present and past judges and elected officials 2 (or their descendents) will be recognized during the 3 weekend's activities; and 4 WHEREAS, The courthouse currently houses the Circuit 5 Clerk's Office, the Coroner's Office, the Regional 6 Superintendent of Schools' Office, the County Treasurer's 7 Office, the County Clerk's Office, the Supervisor of 8 Assessment, the County Board Room and Chairman's Office, 9 several offices of Circuit Judges, the State's Attorney's 10 Office, the Public Defender, Probation Offices, and 3 11 courtrooms; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 13 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 14 we congratulate the people of Christian County on the 15 occasion of the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of their 16 courthouse; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to 18 Christian County Board Chairman John C. Curtin.
