1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Krishan Sant of Darien,
4 Illinois, upon his selection as the 2002 Darien Citizen of
5 the Year; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Sant, known as "Kris", has been a member of
7 the Lions Club, in which he is a charter member since its
8 founding in 1971; he has received virtually every award that
9 can be given to Lions at the local level; Mr. Sant
10 personally donates funds to the Darien Lions Club Foundation,
11 which provides annual scholarships to deserving immigrant
12 students at local schools; Krishan Sant has served on the
13 July 4th Parade committee, the Pancake Breakfast, the
14 Halloween Party, and blood drive committees with the Lions
15 Club; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Sant, a 33 year resident of Darien, founded
17 the West Suburban India Society, whose purpose is to bring
18 together Indians and Pakistanis; he is also a member of the
19 Asian American Coalition and the Alliance of Midwest Indians
20 Association; and
21 WHEREAS, Krishan Sant has taken several trips to India to
22 bring together Lions of Ulhasnagar (a small community outside
23 of Bombay), a local hospital, and a group of ophthalmologists
24 to provide free services to poor people who need cataract
25 surgery; and
26 WHEREAS, Along with the Darien Women's Club and two local
27 churches, Mr. Sant helped start the Darien Blood Assurance
28 program; in 1976, he was the Treasurer of the Darien
29 Bicentennial Commission; in 1973, Krishan Sant was the
30 President of the International Management Council (part of
31 the YMCA); that same year, he was awarded an Outstanding New
32 Citizen of the Year by the Citizenship Council of

1 Metropolitan Chicago and a Good Citizenship award from the
2 General Motors Corporation; Mr. Sant has been presented with
3 a Superior Achievement for Outstanding Programming to develop
4 Business and Community Leaders; he is also a member of the
5 Presenter's Bureau for the Council for a Parliament of the
6 World's Religions; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Sant organized a group of neighbors to
8 protest against a shopping center being built where the
9 Darien Community Park now resides; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Sant is now retired, but involved more than
11 ever in helping people; as a retired employee of
12 Electro-Motive, Mr. Sant serves as Treasurer and Membership
13 Chairman of Golden GM; when Mr. Sant's wife, Krishna, became
14 legally blind several years ago, he became very involved in
15 the DuPage County Center for Independent Living in Wheaton,
16 which specializes in care for the visually impaired; with his
17 help and that of the Lions Club, the Center now has a Braille
18 printer; Mr. Sant is a member of the Service Delivery System
19 committee, and furnishes transportation for his wife and two
20 other visually handicapped persons to attend support meetings
21 in Glen Ellyn; he was also appointed a board member on the
22 DuPage County Investment Board; and
23 WHEREAS, Krishan Sant, with his overwhelming efforts in
24 making his community a better place to live, is an
25 outstanding choice for the Darien Citizen of the Year Award;
26 Mr. Sant devotes his energies to make the world better by
27 encouraging civic minded persons to work hard and to help
28 others by providing love, tolerance, and understanding;
29 therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
31 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
32 we congratulate Krishan Sant of Darien for his achievements

1 and inspiring leadership; we wish him all the best in his
2 future endeavors; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to Krishan Sant with our upmost respect and esteem.
