92_HR0651 LRB9215070JMmbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Our nation has experienced a revival of 3 patriotism since the catastrophic events of September 11, 4 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, Television and photographic images have depicted 6 countless Americans expressing their love of their country 7 through the proud display of the flag of the United States; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, The media's portrayal of this honest emotion is 10 in sharp contrast to the political correctness the media have 11 long aided and abetted, a political correctness that 12 relegated the patriotic display of the American flag to the 13 category of an insensitive, offensive activity; and 14 WHEREAS, That notion perhaps can be traced to the 15 traumatic college protests and demonstrations of the Vietnam 16 era when posters proclaimed that nothing is worth dying for, 17 and to foreign enemies who have delighted in trampling and 18 burning the American flag; and 19 WHEREAS, Such anti-American sentiments and ugly scenes 20 convey the values that our Founding Fathers would find most 21 offensive and that our children may accept as the norm if we 22 do not teach them otherwise by our example; and 23 WHEREAS, The proud and unencumbered expression of 24 patriotism is one of the hallmarks of American democracy; and 25 WHEREAS, The citizens of Illinois expect their State 26 government to reflect and encourage their deep love for the 27 star-spangled banner; and 28 WHEREAS, The use of State funds by anyone who would 29 prevent others from reverently displaying the red, white, and 30 blue offends the sensibilities of all Illinoisans; therefore, -2- LRB9215070JMmbA 1 be it 2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 3 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 4 we strongly insist that no State funds, from whatever source 5 derived, be transferred for any purpose to any individual or 6 other entity that prohibits the patriotic display of the flag 7 of the United States in public places or areas or that may in 8 turn transfer those funds to another individual or entity 9 that prohibits such a display of the flag of the United 10 States.
