92_HR0624 LRB9212694RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble 3 background, worked throughout his life serving the cause of 4 freedom and advancing the public good, having been employed 5 as an entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, 6 Governor of California, and President of the United States; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and distinction 9 for two terms as the 4Oth President of the United States of 10 America, the second of which he was victorious in 49 out of 11 the 50 states in the general election, earning the confidence 12 of three-fifths of the electorate - a record unsurpassed in 13 the history of American presidential elections; and 14 WHEREAS, In 1981, when Ronald Reagan was inaugurated 15 President, he inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by 16 rampant inflation and high unemployment; and 17 WHEREAS, During Mr. Reagan's presidency, he worked in a 18 bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of restoring 19 accountability and common sense to Government, which led to 20 an unprecedented economic expansion and opportunity for 21 millions of Americans; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active social 23 policy agenda for the nation's children helped lower crime 24 and drug use in our neighborhoods; and 25 WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to our armed 26 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in America, 27 her values, and those cherished by the free world and 28 prepared America's Armed Forces to win the Gulf War; and 29 WHEREAS, President Reagan's "vision of peace through 30 strength" led to the end of the Cold War and the ultimate 31 demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing basic human rights -2- LRB9212694RHrh 1 for millions of people; and 2 WHEREAS, On February 6, 2002, Ronald Reagan will 3 celebrate his 91st birthday, thus becoming the oldest living 4 former President; therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 6 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 7 we designate February 6, 2002, as "President Ronald Reagan 8 Day" in the State of Illinois, in honor of our former 9 President; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to President Ronald Reagan as an expression of our 12 esteem; and be it further 13 RESOLVED, That the Illinois House of Representatives 14 congratulates Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the 15 House of Representatives, on his successful effort to 16 establish the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home National Historic 17 Site in Dixon; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 19 presented to Congressman J. Dennis Hastert as an expression 20 of our esteem.
