92_HR0473 LRB9209318RHrhB 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Linnea Olga Anderson, who passed 5 away on June 9, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Linnea Anderson, the daughter of Swedish 7 immigrants, was raised in Chicago, Illinois; she was the 8 beloved wife of the late Douglas B. Anderson; and 9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson studied the organ for 10 years at 10 the American Conservatory of Music, where she was a student 11 of composer Leo Sowerby; she served as an organist at many 12 churches during her life and was a longtime member of the 13 Chicago Society of Women Organists; and 14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson became active in the League of 15 Women Voters during the 1940s and served as president of its 16 Woodlawn chapter; her interest in politics continued and she 17 became the office manager for Hyde Park alderman Robert 18 Merriam after his election in 1947 and there she set a strong 19 standard for effective constituent service; and 20 WHEREAS, For 15 years, Mrs. Anderson was the education 21 director of the Hyde Park Cooperative Society, a supermarket 22 where she strengthened her ties to the community, recognizing 23 most shoppers by name; and during that period she organized a 24 fundraising drive that enabled the Society to staunch the 25 flow of red ink and move to new expanded quarters; and 26 WHEREAS, During her retirement, Mrs. Anderson traveled 27 the world with her husband until his death in 1986 and 28 volunteered for the University of Chicago Service League, 29 working at a resale shop through the 1980s and 1990s; she was 30 honored as one of Hyde Park's outstanding citizens during a 31 1989 centennial celebration of the neighborhood's annexation -2- LRB9209318RHrhB 1 by the city; and 2 WHEREAS, Linnea Anderson and her husband joined the First 3 Unitarian Church of Chicago in 1950; she served the church as 4 an occasional organist and worked on many committees; and 5 WHEREAS, Linnea Anderson's skill at the organ and piano 6 brought joy to audiences throughout her life, and her love of 7 music was central to her being; she leaves as part of her 8 legacy a devotion to musical expression among her many 9 progeny; and 10 WHEREAS, Linnea Anderson has been described as one of 39 11 pillars of Hyde Park-Kenwood, the pillars that are said to be 12 essential to the development of a strong and cohesive 13 community and, in a curious coincidence, Mrs. Anderson left 14 at her death precisely 39 descendents including her children, 15 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great 16 grandchildren; and 17 WHEREAS, The passing of Linnea O. Anderson will be deeply 18 felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her children, 19 Shirley Murray, Doris (husband, Warren) Fraser, and Douglas 20 C. Anderson; her 10 grandchildren; her 21 great 21 grandchildren; and her 5 great-great grandchildren; 22 therefore, be it 23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 24 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 25 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Linnea O. 26 Anderson of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further 27 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 28 presented to the family of Linnea O. Anderson with our 29 sincere condolences.
