92_HR0373 LRB9208900RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Flora Murphy 6 Shaffer is retiring from her position as Great Lakes Regional 7 Director of Information Technology for the United States 8 General Services Administration in Chicago; and 9 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer was the first 10 African-American female in the Great Lakes Region to be 11 promoted to the highest Federal Pay Level, GS 15, a history 12 making event; and 13 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer is a resident of the 14 southeast side of Chicago; she was born in Maxton, North 15 Carolina; she earned her bachelor's degree in Mathematics 16 from Wilberforce University in Ohio; and 17 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer started her career with the 18 Department of Defense thirty years ago by taking the Federal 19 Services Entrance Exam; she later left her position to work 20 in the private sector in the field of Sales and Marketing for 21 four years; she worked for the Veteran's Administration prior 22 to joining the United States General Services Administration 23 in 1980; and 24 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer is a life member of Alpha 25 Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and the Wilberforce 26 University National Alumni Association; she is the National 27 Chairman of Annual Alumni Giving, an active member of Blacks 28 in Government and the Armed Forces Communications and 29 Electronics Association; she is also an active member of the 30 Museum Shores Yacht Club and an active member of Our Lady 31 Gate of Heaven Catholic Church for thirty years; and -2- LRB9208900RHrhA 1 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer was recently selected as 2 the Aetna Insurance Historically Black Colleges and 3 Universities Calendar Alumni for 2001 representing 4 Wilberforce University; and 5 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer was married to Otha L. 6 Shaffer for thirty-three and a half years; they have one son 7 and two granddaughters, all of whom are Wilberforce 8 University graduates; and 9 WHEREAS, Flora Murphy Shaffer plans to move to Las Vegas, 10 Nevada after retiring; she will spend her free time bowling, 11 playing darts, and power boating; therefore, be it 12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 13 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 14 we congratulate Flora Murphy Shaffer on her retirement as the 15 Great Lakes Regional Director of Information Technology for 16 the United States General Services Administration in Chicago, 17 and we wish her well in all of her future endeavors; and be 18 it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to Flora Murphy Shaffer as an expression of our 21 esteem.
