92_HR0340 LRB9208957RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The consumer in the State of Illinois has no 3 choice but to pay the asked-for price for motor fuel in his 4 or her area, and that price is set by oil companies; and 5 WHEREAS, The average price of regular gasoline in the 6 State of Illinois and the Midwest as a whole has recently 7 experienced several unexplained price increases; and 8 WHEREAS, The price of motor fuel outside the containment 9 area of Chicago is not consistent and has the appearance of 10 price gouging by the oil industry; and 11 WHEREAS, The rising cost of motor fuel is beginning to 12 cause a financial hardship on businesses and the citizens of 13 the State of Illinois who rely on motor vehicles for business 14 and travel, while oil corporations have generated record 15 profits during the past twelve months; and 16 WHEREAS, The long-term effect of these price hikes is 17 likely to result in inflation rate increases across the 18 region, causing further undue hardship on businesses and 19 citizens in the State of Illinois; and 20 WHEREAS, Issues remain that require further investigation 21 to understand completely the reasons for high Illinois 22 gasoline prices in May and June of 2000 as well as the 23 unexplainable price hikes that have occurred in April and May 24 2001; and 25 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois does not have the 26 authority to investigate multi-national oil companies to 27 ensure that collusion between these companies has not 28 occurred; therefore, be it 29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 30 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that -2- LRB9208957RHrh 1 we urge the President of the United States to initiate an 2 investigation of possible collusion among petroleum companies 3 resulting in rapid unexplained price increases in motor fuel 4 throughout the Midwest; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 6 delivered to the President of the United States and to each 7 member of the Illinois congressional delegation.
