92_HR0314 LRB9208907LBmg 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association was founded in 3 Chicago in 1901 for the purpose of prison and jail reform and 4 was named for John Howard, the High Sheriff of Bedford 5 County, England; and 6 WHEREAS, Since 1901, the John Howard Association has 7 served the State of Illinois as the State's premier prison 8 watchdog, monitoring, and advocacy organization; and 9 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association is recognized 10 nationally as one of the oldest and most respected voluntary, 11 non-profit prison reform groups; and 12 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association has worked with 13 State, county and municipal governments throughout the State 14 of Illinois in advancing humane and effective jails, prisons, 15 lock-ups, and juvenile detention centers; and 16 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association has advocated in the 17 General Assembly for improved policies, practices, and 18 programs regarding sentencing, alternatives to incarceration, 19 and a variety of program services for residents of 20 correctional facilities; and 21 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association, since its 22 inception, has been led by a diverse group of dedicated 23 volunteer Board members; and 24 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association, has served on a 25 variety of gubernatorial appointed boards and commissions; 26 and 27 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association has participated in 28 and provided leadership to the Legislative Task Force on 29 Released Offenders; and 30 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association, on behalf of the -2- LRB9208907LBmg 1 citizens of Illinois, closely monitors the expenditure of tax 2 dollars on correctional facilities; and 3 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association, as a member of the 4 United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, is supported by private 5 dollars from individuals, foundations and corporations; and 6 WHEREAS, The John Howard Association is celebrating its 7 100th Anniversary of service to the State of Illinois in 8 2001; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 11 we congratulate members of the John Howard Association, 12 express our sincere appreciation for the association's 13 community service over the years, and wish its continued 14 success in the future; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to the officers of the John Howard Association.
