92_HR0277 LRB9208827RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Libertyville 6 High School Band Director, Don Shupe, has been accepted into 7 the American Bandmasters Association; and 8 WHEREAS, Membership in the American Bandmasters 9 Association is one of the highest honors given to concert 10 band directors; it was founded in 1929 by Dr. Edwin Franko 11 Goldman, a composer, conductor, and founder of the Goldman 12 Band, in response to the need for a greater variety of band 13 literature and a lack of camaraderie among band directors; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, Don Shupe received his bachelor's degree in 1973 16 and his master's degree in 1974, both from Northwestern 17 University; and 18 WHEREAS, Don Shupe has been the band director at 19 Libertyville High School since 1974; he conducts the Freshman 20 Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, the Marching 21 Band, and Jazz Ensemble I; and 22 WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Don Shupe, the 23 Libertyville Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I have performed 24 at many prestigious events, including the Illinois Music 25 Educators All State Conference, the University of Illinois' 26 Superstate Band Competition, the Midwest International Band 27 and Orchestra Clinic, and the National Band Association 28 Convention; in addition, the Wind Ensemble participated in 29 the Bands of America, a national concert band festival where 30 only sixteen bands around the United States are invited to 31 attend; and -2- LRB9208827RHrhA 1 WHEREAS, Don Shupe has been the recipient of many awards 2 and commendations, including being honored as "Educator of 3 the Month" in June 1995, and as recipient of the Chicagoland 4 Music Educator Award; in addition, Mr. Shupe has been active 5 as a guest conductor for both concert and jazz bands, 6 including the Illinois Music Educator's Association All State 7 Jazz Ensemble in 1994, the Birch Creek Summer Camp Jazz Camp 8 in 1995, and the Senior Concert Band at the University of 9 Illinois Summer Youth Music Program in 1998; and 10 WHEREAS, After the Libertyville High School Band Concert 11 on May 3, 2001, there will be a special reception for Don 12 Shupe in honor of his acceptance into the American 13 Bandmasters Association; therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we congratulate Libertyville High School Band Director, Don 17 Shupe, on his acceptance into the American Bandmasters 18 Association; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to Don Shupe as an expression of our esteem.
