92_HR0274 LRB9208701RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Jacob W. Getzels, who passed away 5 on April 7, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Getzel was an education expert who helped 7 develop educational administration into a respected field of 8 science inquiry in the 1960s; he also completed 9 groundbreaking research on the nature of creativity in the 10 1970s; and 11 WHEREAS, Jacob W. Getzels was a native of Bialystok, 12 Poland, and he was raised in New York City; he received his 13 bachelor's degree in English from Brooklyne College in 1935, 14 his master's degree in English and comparative literature 15 from Columbia University in 1939, and his doctorate in social 16 relations from Harvard University in 1951; from 1942 until 17 1945, he worked on the assessment staff of the United States 18 Army of Strategic Services; and 19 WHEREAS, In 1951, Dr. Getzels joined the faculty at the 20 University of Chicago where he brought an eclectic approach 21 to the studies of understanding and cognition, the grouping 22 questions of education, educational administration, and the 23 acquisition of values in the field of behavioral science; his 24 research into creativity of children and problem solving 25 among artists established a new line of intelligence tests 26 and surveys that measures the intelligence levels of high 27 school students; his research continues to influence the 28 current studies of both artistic processes and cognition 29 among our country's younger generation; and 30 WHEREAS, During his tenure at the University of Chicago, 31 Dr. Getzels co-authored four books and dozens of articles, 32 which include "The Use of Theory in Educational -2- LRB9208701RHrhA 1 Administration" and "Administration as a Social Process"; he 2 also served as a mentor for generations of students; and 3 WHEREAS, Dr. Getzels served as on the Research Advisory 4 Council in the United States Office of Education from 1964 5 until 1967, as a consultant to the White House Conference on 6 Education in 1965, and on the President's Task Force on 7 Talent in Education in 1967; he was a member of the American 8 cultural team that toured the Soviet Union in 1960, and a 9 member of the United States education delegation to the 10 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 11 1969; and 12 WHEREAS, Dr. Getzels served on the Council of Scholars of 13 the Library of Congress, the President's Science Advisory 14 Committee, the board of directors of the National Society for 15 the Study of Education, and as the vice president of the 16 National Academy of Education; and 17 WHEREAS, Dr. Getzels was the recipient of the Nicholas 18 Murray Butler Medal from Columbia University in 1978; he 19 served on the board of the Spencer Foundation in Chicago; and 20 served on a fellowship in the early 1960s at the Center for 21 Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Palo Alto, 22 California; and 23 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Jacob Getzels, known to 24 family and friends as "Jack", will be deeply felt by all who 25 knew and loved him, especially his wife, Judith Nelson 26 Getzels, also known as "Petey"; his daughters, Katherine and 27 Julie; his son, Peter; his brother, Irving; and his six 28 grandchildren; therefore, be it 29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 30 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 31 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Dr. Jacob 32 W. Getzels; and be it further -3- LRB9208701RHrhA 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the family of Dr. Jacob W. Getzels with our 3 sincere condolences.
