92_HR0272 LRB9208817RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Each year thousands of schools in the United 3 States participate in the National Geographic Bee supported 4 by the National Geographic Society; and 5 WHEREAS, The competition encourages teachers to include 6 geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the 7 subject, and increase public awareness about geography; and 8 WHEREAS, Each school winner takes a written test, and the 9 top hundred scorers in each state and territory compete at 10 the state level; and 11 WHEREAS, David Westlake was the winner from among grades 12 four through eight at St. Emily's School in Mount Prospect, 13 Illinois; and 14 WHEREAS, David Westlake, after competing with the very 15 best students of geography in the entire State of Illinois, 16 was declared the State winner of this rigorous competition; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, David Westlake won the honor of representing the 19 State of Illinois in the national competition in Washington, 20 D.C.; and 21 WHEREAS, Characteristics shared by winners are the desire 22 to excel and an inherent curiosity about geography and the 23 world; therefore, be it 24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 25 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 26 we congratulate David Westlake on winning the 2001 State 27 Geography Bee and we wish him well in the national 28 competition in Washington, D.C.; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 30 presented to David Westlake as an expression of our esteem.
