92_HR0246 LRB9208735RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Dr. John J. 6 Swalec is retiring from his duties as President of Waubonsee 7 Community College; and 8 WHEREAS, Dr. Swalec received his bachelor's, master's and 9 doctorate degrees from Illinois State University; in 10 addition, he completed graduate courses at the University of 11 Illinois and Northern Illinois University; and 12 WHEREAS, Dr. Swalec began his career in education as 13 Department Chairman at Joliet Community College, and as Dean 14 of Moraine Valley Community College from 1960 until 1972; 15 from 1972 until 1977, he served as the Associate Director on 16 the Illinois Community College Board in Springfield, 17 Illinois; from 1977 until 1981, he served as vice-president 18 for Educational Affairs at the College of Lake County in 19 Grayslake, Illinois; and he has been serving Waubonsee 20 Community College as its President since 1981; and 21 WHEREAS, During his extensive career in education, Dr. 22 Swalec has accepted several professional appointments, 23 including chairman of the American Association of Community 24 Colleges Commission on Teaching, Learning, and Technology, 25 co-chair of the Higher Education Technology Task Force, chair 26 of the Technology Committee, chair of the Fox Valley 27 Educational Alliance, chair of the Illinois Community College 28 Board Telecommunications Taskforce, chair of the Skyway 29 Conference, chair of the ICCB Telecommunications Committee, 30 chair of the Board of Directors for the Valley Industrial 31 Association, chair of the Greater Aurora Chamber of Commerce, 32 chair of the Corridor Partnership for Excellence in -2- LRB9208735RHrh 1 Education, chair of the Legislative Committee at Illinois 2 Community College Council of Presidents, chair of the 3 Corridor Partnership for Excellence in Education Legislative 4 Committee, chair of the National Commission on Communication 5 and Technology, chair of the AACC Special Commission for 6 Accountability and Productivity; chair of the Illinois 7 Community College President's Technology Committee, and as 8 co-chair of the Illinois Century Network Task Force; and 9 WHEREAS, Dr. Swalec has also been a member of the IBHE 10 Telecommunications Comittee, the Economic Development 11 Committee, the Aurora Downtown Development Corporation, the 12 Capital Advisory Committee of the Illinois Community College 13 Board, the Finance Committee, the Merchants Bancorp Loan, 14 Audit and Marketing Committee, the Doctoral Advisory Council 15 at Illinois State University, the Aurora Union League, the 16 Aurora Elks, the Aurora Moose, the Aurora Rotary Club, the 17 Copley Long Range Planning Committee, the State of Illinois 18 Athletic Board, the Illinois Video Education Network Task 19 Force, the Engineering Committee for Illinois Century Network 20 the Board of American Association of Community Colleges, the 21 National Junior College Athletic Association, and the NJCAA 22 Executive Committee; and 23 WHEREAS, Dr. Swalec has been the recipient of several 24 awards and commendations, including the Illinois Education 25 Administrator of the year in 1996 from the Illinois 26 Association of Office Personnel and the CEO of the year in 27 1990 from the Midwest Regional, American Association of 28 Community College Trustees; he was the recipient of the 29 Distinguished Service Award in 1988 of the Illinois State 30 Alumnus Club, the Alumni Achievement Award in 1987, the Man 31 of the year in 1985, the Governor's Blue Ribbon Committee of 32 Licensure in 1979; he was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of 33 Fame at Illinois State University in 1981, and he was elected -3- LRB9208735RHrh 1 American Association of Community Colleges Presidential 2 Representative to National Junior College Athletic 3 Association; and 4 WHEREAS, Dr. Swalec's is supported by his very proud and 5 loving family, which includes his wife, Margaret, and his 6 children, Martha, Karen, Jill, and Cindy; and 7 WHEREAS, The Waubonsee Community College Board of 8 Trustees will honor the outstanding career of Dr. John Swalec 9 on May 1, 2001; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 11 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 12 we congratulate Dr. John Swalec on his retirement from his 13 duties as President of Waubonsee Community College; and we 14 wish him well in all of his future endeavors; and be it 15 further 16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to 17 Dr. John J. Swalec as an expression of our esteem.
