92_HR0085 LRB9207958KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, This year the Young Men's Christian Association 3 (YMCA) will celebrate 150 years of service to young men and 4 women across the country; their mission "to put Christian 5 principles into practice through programs that build healthy 6 spirit, mind and body for all" is still as important today as 7 it was all those years ago; and 8 WHEREAS, The YMCA serves 17.5 million people in 9 communities across the United States; the programs include 10 teen clubs, sports leagues, family nights, community service 11 projects, gang prevention programs, and many others; and 12 WHEREAS, The YMCA reaches 9 million kids and teens in 13 nonschool hours; the YMCA is the nation's largest provider of 14 child care; 443 YMCAs work with juvenile courts; 323 work 15 with public housing developments; 1,626 work with elementary 16 schools; and 1,197 work with high schools; last year the YMCA 17 raised $693 million for scholarships, subsidies, and other 18 community services; and 19 WHEREAS, The YMCA is volunteer-founded, volunteer-based, 20 and volunteer-led; more than 600,000 volunteers work together 21 to keep the YMCA meeting the needs of the community; and 22 WHEREAS, Programs at the YMCA include health and fitness, 23 camping, night schools, swimming lessons, lifesaving 24 programs, and many others; basketball, volleyball, and 25 racquetball were all invented at YMCAs; and the YMCA 26 encourages healthy living through their many fitness and 27 sports programs; therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we congratulate the men and women who make up the YMCA; we 31 wish everyone who is a part of this vital organization a -2- LRB9207958KBkb 1 happy 150th anniversary, and continued good wishes for the 2 future.
