92_HR0043 LRB9205776RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Lillie G. Samuels, who passed away 5 on January 25, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Lillie G. Samuels, lovingly known as Grandma 7 Lil, was born on September 28, 1924 in Orville, Alabama to 8 Cammie Mae Scott and David Hatcher; and 9 WHEREAS, Lillie G. Samuels married her husband, the late 10 Wiley Henry Samuels, Sr. in December, 1941; to their union, 11 five children were born; and 12 WHEREAS, Lillie G. Samuels was deeply concerned with the 13 quality of life in the African-American community; she was 14 politically active in the Lawndale and Roseland 15 neighborhoods; she was also a strong advocate for seniors in 16 Oak Park and worked diligently to raise funds at Fifth City 17 Community Center in Chicago for the fight against Aids; she 18 was active in the Annual Chicago Aids Walk, Oak Park 19 Community Response, and AIDS organization and Trinity United 20 Church of Christ AIDS Ministry; and she was a special guest 21 on radio station WSSD's show, Common Sense, in which she 22 presented a grandmother's perspective for parents, educators 23 and children; and 24 WHEREAS, Lillie G. Samuels was a member of Trinity United 25 Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois; she also attended 26 Fellowship Christian Church, in Oak Park, where her son, 27 Wiley, is a deacon, trustee and teacher; and 28 WHEREAS, The passing of Lillie G. Samuels will be deeply 29 felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her loving 30 children, Reverend Dora Samuels-Merritt, Deacon Wiley H. 31 Samuels, Jr., Blanche E. Clark, and Sylvester Samuels, Sr.; -2- LRB9205776RHrh 1 her daughters-in-law, Dorothy and Diane; her sons-in-law, 2 Ronald and Jerome; her grandchildren, Kobie, Jerome II, 3 Pamela, Brian, Kiana, DeAnda, Anthony, Sylvester, Jr. and 4 Stephen; her great-grandchildren, Malcolm II, Dantrell, Maya, 5 Dasjia, Danielle, Jerome III, and Brooke; her sisters, 6 Evangelist Lula Mae Collins, Lucille Henderson, Dorothy 7 Dennis, and Rosie Mae Prevo; her brother-in-law, Donald 8 Smith, Sr.; her sisters-in-law, Wanda and Blanche; her aunt, 9 Dolly Thompson; her dear friend, Georgetta E. Braswell; and a 10 host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends; 11 therefore, be it 12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 13 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 14 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Lillie G. 15 Samuels of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 17 presented to the family of Lillie G. Samuels.
