1 AN ACT concerning election of county board members.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by adding
5 Section 2-3020 as follows:
6 (55 ILCS 5/2-3020 new)
7 Sec. 2-3020. Reduction in the number of county board
8 members. The residents of a county with a board of more than
9 17 members may petition the county board to reduce the number
10 of members to 17. Upon its receipt of petitions signed by at
11 least 10% of the registered voters in the county, the county
12 board shall certify the question to the appropriate election
13 authority for submission to the voters of the county at the
14 next election in accordance with the Election Code. The
15 question shall be in substantially the following form:
16 "Shall the number of commissioners of (insert county
17 name) be decreased from (insert current number of
18 commissioners) to 17?".
19 The votes shall be recorded as "Yes" or "No".
20 If a majority of votes cast are in the affirmative, the
21 number of county board members shall be reduced to 17
22 beginning with the next election following the next federal
23 decennial census after the approval of the question as
24 provided in this Section.
