With respect to detention for retail theft, requires a merchant to "immediately make a reasonable attempt" to inform the police and parents, guardian, or other pri- vate person interested in the welfare of the minor of the detention of a minor suspected of retail theft. SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Provides that the merchant may, in his or her discretion, inform a peace officer of the detention of a minor for the suspected commission of retail theft and may, in the merchant's discretion, surrender custody of the minor to the peace officer.
