MOTOR FUEL STANDARDS-NO MTBE

Synopsis of Bill as introduced:
Amends the Motor Fuel and Petroleum Standards Act. Provides that
the intent of the General Assembly is not to unconstitutionally
restrict legitimate interstate commerce, but to constitutionally aid
the federal government to phase out the use of methyl tertiary butyl
ether (MTBE) and to protect Illinois groundwater resources. Provides
that the public policy of this State is that MTBE must be removed from
Illinois motor fuel. Defines MTBE. Provides that sale of any motor
fuel containing any amount of MTBE is a violation of the Act. Requires
every retailer of motor fuel to display a statement informing the
customer that the motor fuel being sold does not contain MTBE. Sets
standards for display of the statement. Deletes all references to
methanol and co-solvents in the Act. Effective January 1, 2001.
