 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Illinois  Senate  wish  to
 3    express  their  sincere condolences to the family and friends
 4    of Erwin J. Bauman, who passed away October 7, 2000; and

 5        WHEREAS, Erwin J. Bauman was  born  on  May  7,  1910  in
 6    Aurora, Illinois to the late William and Marie Bauman; and

 7        WHEREAS,  Erwin J. Bauman was employed at the Aurora Fire
 8    Department for 31 years starting on February 23, 1942, he was
 9    promoted to Lieutenant  on  February  15,  1950,  Captain  on
10    November  1,  1952, Assistant Chief on September 1, 1956, and
11    subsequently appointed to Fire Chief on January 18, 1961;  he
12    retired  on  May  31, 1973 after serving as Fire Chief for 12
13    years; and

14        WHEREAS,  Erwin  J.  Bauman  held  memberships  in   many
15    organizations  such  as:  being  a charter member of the Kane
16    County  Fire  Chief's  Association,  the  International  Fire
17    Chief's Association, The Illinois  Fire  Chief's  Association
18    for  40  years;  as  well  as  numerous  other  Fire  Chief's
19    Associations;  he  also held memberships with the Loyal Order
20    of the Moose Lodge 400, Third Ward Social Club,  Tiger  Club,
21    Aurora Bowling Association, Aurora Kiwanis Club, and the Elks
22    Club  Lodge  705;  he  was also a lifelong member of St. John
23    United Church of Christ, where he served  on  the  board  for
24    many years; and

25        WHEREAS,  The  passing  of Erwin J. Bauman will be deeply
26    felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 67
27    years,  Elza;  his   daughter,   Mary   Agnes   Martin;   his
28    granddaughters, Sandra Oltrogge, and Karen Mertl; and Karen's
29    husband,  Ron  Mertl;  his  grandson,  Tony Wells, and Tony's
30    wife, Amy Wells; three great grandchildren,  Michael,  Emmett
31    and Alexandria; his nephew, Donald Horner, and Donald's wife,
32    Sharon Horner; his many loving cousins; and countless members

 1    of  the  Aurora  Fire  Department  who  have had the honor of
 2    serving with him; and

 3        WHEREAS, Erwin J. Bauman will best be remembered for  his
 4    dedication  and  continual  hard  work  as  a fire prevention
 5    advocate who promoted ideas such as  holding  2-3  hour  fire
 6    prevention parades in downtown Aurora, walking house to house
 7    to  check  furnaces  and  fuses, using a fireman dressed as a
 8    Dalmatian named "Sparky" to discuss fire safety at the  local
 9    schools,  encouraging the use of more advanced fire equipment
10    such as trucks with pre-connected fire hoses and  encouraging
11    the  use  of  fresh-air breather packs, or oxygen tanks, when
12    entering smoke filled houses; and

13        WHEREAS, Erwin J. Bauman is also known for  starting  one
14    of  the city's first fire extinguisher companies, Aurora Fire
15    Protection Co., now Aurora Tri-State  Fire  Protection  Inc.;
16    and

17        WHEREAS, Erwin J. Bauman will be remembered for his loyal
18    dedication  and  continual  hard  work  in all aspects of his
19    life; therefore, be it

20        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL
21    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22    all who knew him, the death of Erwin  J.  Bauman  of  Aurora,
23    Illinois; and be it further

24        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
25    presented to the family of Erwin J. Bauman.
