91_SR0407 LRB9114884KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Word has come to the Illinois Senate of the 3 passing of Reverend Garfield Hubbard, Sr., retired Pastor of 4 Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis, 5 Illinois; and 6 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was born in Coldwater, 7 Mississippi on October 16, 1915; his parents were Jonas and 8 Arlener Hubbard; he accepted Christ as his Savior and was 9 baptized on August 12, 1931 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist 10 Church in Proctor, Arkansas; in 1937 he married Mildred Jones 11 and they moved to the St. Louis area in 1940; and 12 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard worked for St. Louis Malliber 13 Casting Company until 1957 when he entered full-time 14 ministry; he received his call to ministry while a member of 15 Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church; in 1948 he was called to 16 the pastorate of First Baptist Church of Golden Garden where 17 he served for two years; in May of 1951 he was installed as 18 the pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, where 19 he served for over forty-three years; and 20 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was responsible for many of the 21 church's programs, including the Sunday Night Revival Hour, 22 which could be heard on KATZ radio for over thirty years; 23 Reverend Hubbard conducted revivals across the country, and 24 was a noted musician and soloist; through his leadership the 25 church was able to burn their mortgage on the current 26 property in four years; and 27 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard served as the Counselor of the 28 Usher's Department for the Baptist General State Convention 29 of Illinois, Instructor for the District and State Congress, 30 President of the Woodriver Baptist District Association of 31 Illinois, and Treasurer of the Baptist General State Congress 32 of Illinois; and -2- LRB9114884KBkb 1 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was a Life Member and Past Vice 2 President of the East St. Louis NAACP; he was President of 3 the East St. Louis Ministerial Alliance; he was a member of 4 the East St. Louis Business and Professional Men's Club, the 5 East St. Louis/Metropolitan Chaplaincy Program, the Advisory 6 Board for the City of East St. Louis, the Urban League, and a 7 Board Member of the Civil Service Commission; he served as a 8 St. Louis Auxiliary Policeman, the Deputy Clerk for St. Clair 9 County, and a Trustee for State Community College; he owned 10 Hubbard's Marriage License Bureau; and he was a 32nd Degree 11 Mason of Tyree Consistory; and 12 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard will be remembered as a warm 13 and caring person, who worked hard to care for his family; he 14 was a role model to many, and a man who never wavered in his 15 beliefs or his faith; and 16 WHEREAS, The passing of Reverend Garfield Hubbard, Sr. 17 will be felt by all who knew him, especially his children, 18 Garfield (Rosceiata) Hubbard, Jr., Malvin E. (Karen) Hubbard, 19 Claude E. (Dianne) Hubbard, Danny J. (Carroll) Hubbard, and 20 Marion C. (Caroline) Hubbard; his twenty-five grandchildren; 21 his forty-seven great-grandchildren; his three 22 great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Reverend Jonas (Mary) 23 Hubbard, Jr.; his sister, Mrs. Fannie B. Hubbard; his nieces, 24 nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and family at Morning 25 Star Missionary Baptist Church; therefore, be it 26 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 27 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 28 all who knew and loved him, the passing of Reverend Garfield 29 Hubbard, Sr.; and be it further 30 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 31 presented to the family of Reverend Hubbard.
