91_SR0332 LRB9113675CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Charles James "Chuck" Durham, Sr. of Chicago 4 on Monday, March 27, 2000; and 5 WHEREAS, Charles Durham, Sr. was born in Memphis, 6 Tennessee, on October 15, 1927, the son of Marcellus and 7 Theola Durham; as a young man, he accepted Christ and was 8 baptized at the Shiloh M.B. Church in Chicago; and 9 WHEREAS, On July 23, 1949, Charles Durham married Vivian 10 Patten; they recently celebrated their 50th wedding 11 anniversary; and 12 WHEREAS, Charles Durham was educated in elementary and 13 high school in Memphis, studied at the University of Illinois 14 in Accountancy, and earned his Juris Doctorate degree at 15 Depaul University Law School; and 16 WHEREAS, Charles Durham was admitted to the Illinois Bar 17 in 1955 and entered private practice in the law firm of 18 Washington, Durham, Kennon, Bryant and Hunter; he was a trial 19 attorney practicing in the areas of personal injury, products 20 liability, landlord-tenant relations, and federal criminal 21 law; he served as a Circuit Court Judge in Cook County from 22 1968 to 1992; and in 1996, he was appointed to the Illinois 23 State Board of Elections; and 24 WHEREAS, Charles Durham was affiliated with the American 25 Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the 26 Chicago Bar Association, the Cook County Bar Association, the 27 National Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, 28 Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, and the Illinois Judicial 29 Council; and 30 WHEREAS, A loving husband, proud father, and grandfather, 31 Charles Durham, Sr.'s passing will be deeply felt by his -2- LRB9113675CBcb 1 family and friends, especially his wife, Vivian; his sister, 2 Lula Bowers; his daughter, Dr. Barbara Henley; his daughter 3 and son-in-law, Covette and Rev. Charles Hamilton; his son 4 and daughter-in-law, Charles J. Jr. and Nedra Glenn Durham; 5 his grandchildren, Ronald, Charles III, Matthew, LaKeisha, 6 Megan, and Charlyna; and his great-grandchildren, Shekinah 7 and Joshua; therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow 10 and regret the death of Charles James Durham, Sr. and extend 11 our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it 12 further 13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 14 presented to his widow, Vivian Durham.
