91_SR0313 LRB9113492CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Jacob Ginsburg, a leader and advocate in the 4 field of rehabilitation, of Evanston on Tuesday, February 15, 5 2000; and 6 WHEREAS, Jacob Ginsburg was born in Chicago in 1917; he 7 was a graduate of Senn High School and received a bachelor's 8 degree in history from the University of Illinois at 9 Champaign/Urbana; and 10 WHEREAS, During World War II, he served in France as an 11 Army Medic with the rank of sergeant; when he returned from 12 military service, he attended the University of Chicago 13 School of Social Service Administration where he met and 14 married Evelyn Harris, his wife of 41 years who died in 1992; 15 both held master's degrees in social work from the University 16 of Chicago; and 17 WHEREAS, In 1959, he accepted a position with the 18 American Joint Distribution Committee, a Jewish relief 19 agency, serving in Iran and Tunisia; he returned to Chicago 20 in 1963 and began a 35 year career in the rehabilitation 21 field when he became the Executive Director of the Chicago 22 Association for Retarded Citizens; from 1968 to 1983 he held 23 the job of Executive Director of the Chicago School and 24 Workshop for the Retarded; in the mid 1970s, Mr. Ginsburg was 25 instrumental in founding the Illinois Association of 26 Rehabilitation Facilities, a statewide trade association for 27 agencies working in the field of vocational rehabilitation; 28 he served as president of the association in 1977 and 1978; 29 and 30 WHEREAS, Upon his retirement in 1983, he became a 31 consultant to Community Alternatives Unlimited and worked in 32 this capacity until his death; he served as a mentor to many -2- LRB9113492CBcb 1 of his colleagues in the social work field; and 2 WHEREAS, Mr. Ginsburg was also a member of the Beth Emet 3 the Free Synagogue for almost 40 years, serving as president 4 of the congregation for two terms in the mid 1970s; an ardent 5 supporter of the State of Israel, he traveled there 6 frequently; and 7 WHEREAS, Jacob Ginsburg's passing will be deeply felt by 8 his family and friends, especially his daughter, Anna 9 Ginsburg, and his sisters, Evelyn Smith and Gertrude 10 Kjruglik; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow 13 and regret the death of Jacob Ginsburg and extend our sincere 14 condolences to his family and friends; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 16 presented to the family of Jacob Ginsburg.
