 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are  saddened
 3    to  learn  of  the  death  of Philip M. Klutznick of Chicago,
 4    Illinois, who recently passed away; and

 5        WHEREAS, Philip Klutznick was  born  in  1907  in  Kansas
 6    City,  Missouri;  he attended law school and worked as a city
 7    attorney for Omaha, Nebraska; during World War II  he  worked
 8    for  President  Roosevelt as a developer of temporary housing
 9    for defense workers; one of the towns he built was Oak Ridge,
10    Tennessee, the home of the first nuclear bomb; and

11        WHEREAS, After the war Mr. Klutznick and his family moved
12    to Chicago,  where  he  worked  with  his  company,  American
13    Community  Builders, to develop Park Forest, a planned suburb
14    centered around a mall; and

15        WHEREAS, Philip Klutznick  served  as  the  international
16    president  of  B'nai  B'rith  from 1953 to 1959; he served as
17    president of the World Jewish Congress in the late 1970s, and
18    was chairman of the Public Affairs Committee  of  the  Jewish
19    United Fund; and

20        WHEREAS,  Philip  Klutznick  served President Eisenhower,
21    President Kennedy, and President Carter as an  envoy  to  the
22    United  Nations; in 1979 he was appointed by President Carter
23    to serve as commerce secretary; and

24        WHEREAS, Philip Klutznick will be remembered for creating
25    Water Tower Place in Chicago, Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, the
26    Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook, and River Oaks in Calumet City;
27    and

28        WHEREAS, Philip Klutznick is survived  by  his  children,
29    Bettylu  (Dr.  Paul) Saltzman, Thomas (Tina) Klutznick, James
30    (Judith) Klutznick, Robert  (Gloria)  Klutznick,  and  Samuel
31    Klutznick;  his grandchildren, Amy (Steven Wellner) Saltzman,

 1    David (Jody Futorian) Saltzman, Peter (Laurel) Saltzman, Jane
 2    (Jeffry) Baird, Karen Klutznick,  John  (Heather)  Klutznick,
 3    Daniel  Klutznick,  Katherine Klutznick, Barri (Peter Pencak)
 4    Klutznick,  Marc  Klutznick,  Kimberly  Klutznick,   Jennifer
 5    Klutznick,   Lauren  Klutznick,  and  Nathan  Klutznick;  his
 6    great-grandchildren, Rebecca and  Nathan  Wellner,  Veronica,
 7    Emanuel,  Alex,  and  Jordan  Saltzman, and Adin and Benjamin
 8    Baird; and many other members of his family; therefore, be it

 9        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL
10    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11    all that knew him, the memory of Philip Klutznick of Chicago,
12    Illinois; and be it further

13        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
14    presented  to  the family of Philip Klutznick, along with our
15    sincere regards.
