91_SR0186 LRB9108931CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Arlene J. Nick of Batavia, founder and 4 publisher of the Windmill Herald, the Sugar Grove Herald, and 5 the Blackberry Press weekly newspapers, on Friday, October 1, 6 1999; and 7 WHEREAS, She was born in Chicago on February 24, 1943, 8 the daughter of Herbert and Sarah "Sadie" Layland; she was 9 united in marriage to Sherman W. Nick in June of 1967; and 10 WHEREAS, She has been a room mother, Sunday school 11 teacher, youth leader, soccer mom, hockey mom, Brownie 12 leader, Girl Scout leader, and Batavia Boosters Club 13 volunteer; and 14 WHEREAS, She was active in the Batavia Council on Aging, 15 the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Task Force, the 16 American Cancer Society, the Batavia Easter Seals Telethon, 17 the Fox Hill board of directors, and the United Methodist 18 Church; and 19 WHEREAS, She was the first woman to join the Batavia 20 Rotary Club after the Supreme Court decided in 1987 that 21 women could be admitted to previously all-male organizations; 22 and 23 WHEREAS, She wrote a newspaper column for many years and 24 was the host of the "Windmill Talk and Kudos Forum" on 25 Batavia's BATV43 Cable channel; and 26 WHEREAS, The city dedicated its newest historic windmill, 27 built in 1891, to her on September 5, 1999; and 28 WHEREAS, Her mother, Sarah, preceded her in death in 29 March of 1992; and 30 WHEREAS, Her passing will be deeply felt by her family -2- LRB9108931CBcb 1 and countless friends, especially her husband, Sherman; her 2 son, David; her daughters, Tara Reed and Tiffany Green; her 3 sons-in-law, Marc Reed and Matt Green; her grandchildren, 4 Brandon and Taylor Reed and the grandchild she was expecting 5 in January; her step-daughter, Leslie Monroe; her 6 step-grandsons, Ryan, Matthew, Scott, and Alex Monroe; her 7 father and step-mother, Herbert and Betty Layland; her 8 brothers, Kit and Roger; her sister, Bonnie; her 9 sister-in-law, Barb; her best girlfriend, Nora Anderson; and 10 her sidekick, Kerry Bailey; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow 13 and regret the death of Arlene J. Nick and extend our sincere 14 condolences to her family and friends; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to her husband, Sherman Nick.
