91_SR0040 LRB9105600CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Illinois is blessed with abundant waterways; 3 they provide drinking water and important commercial and 4 recreational opportunities, and have contributed much to the 5 natural beauty, history, and culture of this State; and 6 WHEREAS, The locks and dams on Illinois waterways bring 7 many cultural and economic benefits; they make possible an 8 important body of waterborne trade, contribute to flood 9 control, and provide recreational resources; and 10 WHEREAS, The waterways of Illinois and their associated 11 locks and dams benefit the people of many states and are used 12 in a significant portion of midwestern commerce; and 13 WHEREAS, The considerable importance of Illinois' 14 waterways to states throughout the midwest and other parts of 15 our Nation make them an appropriate subject for federal 16 assistance; and 17 WHEREAS, It is especially important that these resources 18 be properly maintained, so that their usefulness is 19 unimpaired and their beauty is preserved for future 20 generations; therefore, be it 21 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we express our 23 commitment to maintaining, preserving, and where appropriate 24 upgrading Illinois' system of waterways and their associated 25 locks and dams, and we invite the United States Congress to 26 join us in this commitment; and be it further 27 RESOLVED, That we respectfully but urgently request the 28 United States Congress to express its commitment to the 29 Nation's waterways by making available additional financial 30 and technical assistance to aid the State of Illinois in 31 preserving and maintaining its important waterways and the -2- LRB9105600CBcb 1 critical locks and dams they contain; and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 3 presented to the President pro tempore of the United States 4 Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of 5 Representatives, and to each member of the Illinois 6 congressional delegation.
