91_SR0016 LRB9102329KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Nathaniel L. Chandler Sr., of 4 Springfield, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Chandler Sr. was born in Springfield, 6 Illinois, on February 21, 1920; his parents were Frank and 7 Flossie Chandler; and 8 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Chandler Sr. attended Feitshans High 9 School in Springfield; he was an accomplished artist who had 10 many of his drawings displayed throughout the city; he served 11 in the United States Army as a Sergeant in World War II; and 12 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Chandler Sr. married Eleanor J. Neal 13 in 1943; she preceded him in death; and 14 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Chandler Sr. was employed by Ideal 15 Drug Store, Pattersons Floor Covering, A-1 Kitchen Planners, 16 and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, working at the 17 Illinois State Fairgrounds until his retirement in 1996; he 18 was commemorated by the State of Illinois for many 19 accomplishments while employed with the Department of 20 Agriculture; Nathaniel Chandler Sr. was the first Black 21 carpenter to work for a general contractor, the first Black 22 to become a foreman in the Union, and the first Black 23 assigned as a Coordinator for Carpenters Local #16; and 24 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Chandler Sr. counted membership with 25 Carpenters Local #16, American Legion Post #809, and AARP; he 26 enjoyed championship bowling, gardening, and entertaining his 27 friends and family members; and 28 WHEREAS, He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, 29 Nathan L. Chandler and Pam; his son, Stephon P. Chandler; 30 his son, Boyce Chandler; his daughter, Nathalie Chandler; his 31 daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl L. Chandler-Roberts and Fito; -2- LRB9102329KBkb 1 his 16 grandchildren; his 5 great-grandchildren; his sister, 2 Frances Strange; his in-laws, Clarence and Peggie Senor; many 3 nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it 4 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 6 his family and friends, the death of Nathaniel Chandler Sr., 7 of Springfield, Illinois; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to the family of Nathaniel Chandler Sr., along with 10 our sincere sympathies.
