91_SJ0042 LRB9108069CBcb 1 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The markets and price discovery mechanisms upon 3 which the independent farmers of Illinois rely to determine 4 the price of their products require a competitive market 5 system that adjusts according to production levels and market 6 competition for these products; and 7 WHEREAS, The consolidation and concentration of major 8 former competitors may allow a small number of large 9 corporations to control commodity price discovery mechanisms 10 through monopoly power; and 11 WHEREAS, The United States Department of Justice is the 12 agency charged with the enforcement of antitrust laws in 13 cases where large corporate combinations and practices may 14 create monopoly power and unfairly impact prices to the 15 ultimate detriment of producers and the consumer; therefore, 16 be it 17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF 19 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that the United States 20 Department of Justice should thoroughly investigate 21 Smithfield Foods' proposal to combine with Murphy Family 22 Farms to determine the effect of that combination on market 23 operations, which impact producers of agricultural products 24 and consumers of that product; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 26 presented to the President of the United States, the 27 President pro tempore of the United States Senate, the 28 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, each 29 member of the Illinois congressional delegation, and the 30 Attorney General of the United States.
