1 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire has brought the St. Louis Cardinals
3 fame and honor with his record setting 70 home runs; and
4 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire made certain that the 1998 baseball
5 season would be one the fans of the St. Louis Cardinals would
6 certainly remember; in June, he tied Reggie Jackson's record
7 of 37 home runs before the All-Star break; in August, he
8 became the only player in history to hit 50 home runs in 3
9 consecutive seasons; in September, he became the third player
10 ever to hit 60 home runs in a season; on September 8, 1998,
11 he broke the record of 61 home runs and went on to set a new
12 record of 70 home runs in a season; and
13 WHEREAS, The Poplar Street Bridge carries Interstates 55,
14 70, and 64 across the Mississippi River; therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
17 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we proclaim the
18 Poplar Street Bridge be renamed the Mark McGwire Bridge and
19 that we respectfully request the Department of Transportation
20 to erect, at suitable locations, appropriate signs, markers,
21 or plaques giving notice of the name; and be it further
22 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
23 presented to Mark McGwire and the Secretary of
24 Transportation.
