 1        AN ACT concerning Lyme disease.

 2        Be it  enacted  by  the  People  of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section  5.   The  Department of Public Health Powers and
 5    Duties Law of the Civil Administrative Code  of  Illinois  is
 6    amended by changing Section 2310-390 as follows:

 7        (20 ILCS 2310/2310-390) (was 20 ILCS 2310/55.65)
 8        Sec. 2310-390.  Lyme disease.
 9        (a)  The Department shall establish policies, procedures,
10    standards,  and criteria for the collection, maintenance, and
11    exchange   of   medical   information   necessary   for   the
12    identification  and  evaluation   of   Lyme   disease.    The
13    Department  shall  include  in  its  public  health promotion
14    programs and materials  the  medical  information  about  the
15    symptoms,  causes,  prevention, and treatment of Lyme disease
16    and how treatment may be obtained.
17        (b)  Subject  to  appropriation,  the  Department   shall
18    conduct a study regarding the prevalence, identification, and
19    evaluation  and  treatment  of  Lyme disease. The study shall
20    include, but need not  be  limited  to,  a  determination  of
21    whether  there are a significant number of Lyme disease cases
22    that do not meet the federal definition, a  determination  of
23    health  care  provider awareness regarding identification and
24    treatment of Lyme disease, a determination of the  volume  of
25    unreported  cases of Lyme disease, coordination with relevant
26    State agencies to identify  potential  existence  of  species
27    capable   of  carrying  the  bacteria  associated  with  Lyme
28    disease, and the amount of  information  available  to  treat
29    those  diagnosed  with  Lyme  disease.  The  Department shall
30    complete the study by January 1,  2002  and  issue  a  report
31    regarding  its  findings  to  the  Governor  and  the General
