91_HR0989 LRB9115198RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, The Dungy Family recently organized a mini 6 family reunion that ran from November 17th through November 7 19, 2000 in Chicago, Illinois; the weekend festivities 8 concluded with the Dungy Family taking in a Sunday afternoon 9 football game featuring the Chicago Bears vs. the Tampa Bay 10 Buccaneers, coached by family member, Tony Dungy; and 11 WHEREAS, This reunion was initiated by a genealogical 12 project at the DuSable Museum of African American History in 13 Chicago where Program Director, Hank Dungy Jr., headed a 14 summer project designed to teach African American youths the 15 importance of knowing their heritage; and 16 WHEREAS, The Dungy Lineage goes back 167 years to John 17 William Dungy who was an indentured servant who escaped the 18 South by way of the Underground Railroad in 1860, originating 19 his escape from Richmond, Virginia and beginning his sojourn 20 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Mr. Dungy was a literate man 21 who chronicled his journey by writing letters back to 22 Philadelphia addressed to Mr. William Still, the conductor of 23 the Underground Railroad; the letters were consistent for 24 several years, totaling over 30; and 25 WHEREAS, To date, there are about 100 direct descendants 26 of the Dungy lineage who are centered in the Richmond 27 Virginia area; therefore be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we congratulate the Dungy family on celebrating their family 31 history this past November; and be it further -2- LRB9115198RHrh 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the Dungy Family as an expression of our esteem.
