91_HR0960 LRB9115182RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to honor achievements in 4 education in the lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Steven Gross of Wilmette, Illinois became one of 7 only 141 students nationwide to be named Presidential Scholar 8 this year; and 9 WHEREAS, As part of the award, Steven will travel to 10 Washington D.C. to receive it and to meet with government 11 officials and highly accomplished people from several fields 12 of art and science; and 13 WHEREAS, This award caps four years in which Steven took 14 on, and usually excelled at, a wide variety of academics and 15 extracurriculars, such as the honors program, football, 16 science, foreign language, and theater; and 17 WHEREAS, Steven's academic achievements include: a 18 National Merit Scholarship, being a Illinois State Scholar, a 19 certificate with merit on the National Greek Exam, and awards 20 specific to other areas such as math, science, and yearbook 21 editing; and 22 WHEREAS, As part of his studies for Loyola's Dumbach 23 honors program, Steven performed service work which included 24 visiting Alzheimer's patients, working with physically and 25 mentally disabled people on fitness and weight training, and 26 after-school tutoring at an Evanston school; he also spent 27 part of a summer at a Habitat for Humanity project in South 28 Dakota; he plans to take on another Habitat project before he 29 starts classes at Duke University, where he plans to take 30 pre-med courses; and 31 WHEREAS, As part of his Presidential Scholar trip, Steven -2- LRB9115182RHrh 1 was asked to invite the educator considered most influential 2 in his life; he invited James O'Loughlin, who taught him 3 freshman English; Steven credits O'Loughlin with teaching him 4 to write, which in turn has helped him secure much of what he 5 has earned; and 6 WHEREAS, Steven Gross shares his outstanding achievements 7 with his proud parents, Mark and Christine Gross; therefore, 8 be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 11 we congratulate Steven Gross of Wilmette, Illinois on his 12 recognition as being a Presidential Scholar this year; and be 13 it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to Steven Gross as an expression of our esteem.
