91_HR0884 LRB9114980KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to honor milestones within the 4 State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, The Illinois Times, downstate Illinois' 6 alternative newspaper, is celebrating it's twenty-fifth 7 anniversary in the year 2000; and 8 WHEREAS, In 1975 the Illinois Times was founded in 9 Springfield, Illinois, by William Friedman and Alan Anderson, 10 Jr.; the newspaper focused on politics, people, history, 11 entertainment, the arts, and the communities in and around 12 the State Capitol; and 13 WHEREAS, The newspaper was purchased in 1977 by Fletcher 14 F. Farrar, Jr.; for the next twenty years he acted as editor 15 and publisher; during this time the newspaper helped 16 establish the national Association of ALternative 17 Newsweeklies (AAN), an organization based in Washington, D.C. 18 with 120 member newspapers and 19 million readers; and 19 WHEREAS, Illinois Times has developed a reputation for 20 hard hitting news and coverage of Central Illinois; the 21 newspaper has earned numerous awards for excellence in 22 design, layout, commentary, feature and news reporting, and 23 arts coverage; and 24 WHEREAS, In 1997 the Illinois Times was purchased by New 25 Voice Communications (now Yesse! Communications); editorial 26 decisions are still made in Springfield and the focus of the 27 newspaper has not changed; throughout their anniversary year, 28 the Illinois Times will showcase memories of their 29 twenty-five years in Springfield with guest editorials, 30 pictures, articles, commentaries, and special features; 31 therefore, be it -2- LRB9114980KBkb 1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 2 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 3 we congratulate the staff of the Illinois Times as they 4 celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the premiere 5 alternative newspaper of Central Illinois; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to the staff of the Illinois Times.
