91_HR0879 LRB9114929RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The Illinois Basin is a leading producer of coal 3 throughout the world; and 4 WHEREAS, Coal remains vital to the economy of Southern 5 Illinois, having an estimated $750 billion worth of 6 recoverable coal; and 7 WHEREAS, Private utility companies are working with 8 researchers in the development of clean-coal programs that 9 make Illinois' high-sulfurcoal more attractive to coal-fired 10 power plants; and 11 WHEREAS, State-supported coal research programs fund the 12 research and development of technologies that keep Illinois 13 basin coal ecologically and economically competitive with 14 other energy sources; and 15 WHEREAS, Illinois reclamation laws permit reclaimed land 16 to be used for a variety of uses, including cropland, 17 pasture, wildlife, forestry, and recreation; and 18 WHEREAS, The United States currently has no formal energy 19 policy, therefore, be it 20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 21 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 22 we urge the United States Congress to adopt a NATIONAL ENERGY 23 POLICY that promotes coal as a primary source of energy for 24 the United States of America.
