1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor milestones in the lives
4 of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Ron Powell of Mundelein, Illinois, president of
6 United Food and Commercial Workers Local #881 was recently
7 honored by the Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor; and
8 WHEREAS, The event was held at the Marriott's
9 Lincolnshire Resort on May 20, 2000, with Mr. Powell being
10 named the Labor Person of 2000; and
11 WHEREAS, United Food and Commercial Workers Local #881
12 has about 37,000 members representing supermarket and health
13 care workers across Illinois; and
14 WHEREAS, Political fundraising campaigns for Illinois
15 candidates, raising money for leukemia research, having a
16 long-standing relationship with Building Brighter Futures
17 Family Services, and sponsoring an annual food drive and
18 children's Christmas party for families in Chicago's Lawndale
19 neighborhood are some of the many ways that Local #881 makes
20 a valued contribution to the State; and
21 WHEREAS, Ron Powell was raised on a farm near Eau Claire,
22 Wisconsin; in 1961 he went to work for Local #881 as a field
23 representative and has served as field staff supervisor,
24 director of field operations, and secretary-treasurer; he is
25 a vice-president of the Illinois State AFL-CIO, a member of
26 the UFCW International Executive Board, and has served on the
27 Mundelein Village Board for ten years; therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
30 we congratulate Ron Powell on being named Labor Person of
31 2000 by the Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor; and be

2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to Ron Powell, along with our sincere regards.
