91_HR0809 LRB9113850CBcbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are 3 happy to offer their congratulations to Rabbi Vernon Kurtz on 4 the occasion of his installation as President of the 5 Rabbinical Assembly; and 6 WHEREAS, Rabbi Kurtz received his Bachelor's Degree from 7 York University in Toronto, his Master's Degree and Rabbinic 8 Ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 9 and his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Chicago 10 Theological Seminary; and 11 WHEREAS, Rabbi Kurtz and his wife, Bryna, are the loving 12 parents of two girls, Hadassa and Shira; and 13 WHEREAS, Rabbi Vernon Kurtz is currently Rabbi of North 14 Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park; he is a member 15 of the Rabbinical Assembly Committee on Jewish Law and 16 Standards; and 17 WHEREAS, Rabbi Kurtz has served as President of the 18 Chicago Region of the Rabbinical Assembly, President of the 19 Hyde Park Kenwood Interfaith Council, President of the 20 Southeast Lake County Clergy Association, Secretary of the 21 Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, Chairman of the 22 Congregations and Community Campaign of JUF, Chairman of the 23 Joint Placement Commission of the Rabbinical Assembly, 24 Executive Council Member and Administrative Committee Member 25 of the Rabbinical Assembly, President of the Chicago Board of 26 Rabbis, and National Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal 27 Rabbinic Cabinet; he has just completed a term as President 28 of the UJA Rabbinic Cabinet and President of the Council of 29 Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago; and 30 WHEREAS, Rabbi Kurtz is the recipient of the Rabbinic 31 Award, Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, Council of -2- LRB9113850CBcbA 1 Jewish Federations in 1984 and 1995; the Young Leadership 2 Award from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago in 3 1985; the State of Israel Bonds Jerusalem Covenant Award in 4 1996; and the Rabbi Simon Greenberg Rabbinic Achievement 5 Award from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1998; and 6 WHEREAS, Rabbi Kurtz hs served as Adjunct Assistant 7 Professor of Rabbinic Literature, Spertus College of Judaica, 8 and Adjunct Lecturer in Jewish Studies, the Chicago 9 Theological Seminary; he is currently a monthly Torah 10 commentator for the Chicago Jewish News; and 11 WHEREAS, Rabbi Vernon Kurtz has earned the respect and 12 admiration of all who know him; therefore, be it 13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 14 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 15 we congratulate Rabbi Vernon Kurtz on his installation as 16 President of the Rabbinical Assembly and extend our sincere 17 best wishes to him in the future; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 19 presented to Rabbi Vernon Kurtz as a token of our esteem.
