91_HR0778 LRB9113826CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the members of 3 this Body welcome the opportunity to recognize citizens of 4 this State who make outstanding contributions to society; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Donald A. 6 Johnson has announced his retirement as president of the 7 Illinois AFL-CIO; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was appointed president of the 9 Illinois AFL-CIO in April of 1993 and elected without 10 opposition in 1996; as president, he represents over 1.25 11 million working men and women in Illinois; and 12 WHEREAS, Prior to becoming president, Mr. Johnson was 13 elected as secretary-treasurer and prior to that served as 14 COPE/Legislative Director of the Illinois AFL-CIO; from 1978 15 to 1987, Mr. Johnson served as executive secretary to the 16 West Central Illinois Building and Construction Trades 17 Council; from 1973 to 1977, he served as the administrative 18 assistant to the director and later as the director of the 19 Illinois Department of Labor; and 20 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson has been a member of the 21 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 34 22 since 1956 and is a former executive board member, president, 23 and business manager/financial secretary of his local union; 24 and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson is also a member of the Illinois 26 Workers Compensation Advisory Board, Illinois Employment 27 Security Advisory Board, Illinois Labor Management Committee, 28 and Illinois Workers Compensation Self Insurance Advisory 29 Board; and 30 WHEREAS, In 1992, he was the Illinois Labor 31 Representative to the German Marshall Fund touring the -2- LRB9113826CBcb 1 education system in both Germany and Denmark, and in 1993, he 2 was a participant in the Israeli Trade Union Delegation; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson and his wife, Nancy, are the loving 4 parents of one son and the proud grandparents of two 5 grandsons; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was born into the labor movement, 7 following in his father's footsteps as an electrician; his 8 mother was a member of Communication Workers of America and 9 worked for Illinois Bell for over 15 years; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 11 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 12 we congratulate Donald A. Johnson on his retirement as 13 president of the Illinois AFL-CIO and applaud his fine work 14 over the years; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to Donald A. Johnson.
