91_HR0768 LRB9113820CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were 3 saddened to learn of the recent death of R. Elizabeth Shannon 4 of Chicago; and 5 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Shannon was born Rose Elizabeth Brown 6 in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 12, 1916, the daughter 7 of the late Simon and Willie Mae Brown; her parents relocated 8 to Chicago where she was educated at Burke elementary school 9 and DuSable and Hyde Park high schools; and 10 WHEREAS, She was joined in holy matrimony to William H. 11 Shannon, who preceded her in death in 1994, on January 24, 12 1936, and to this union were born two children, Betty Jo and 13 William H. III; and 14 WHEREAS, As a politician's wife whose husband served 15 three terms as Committeeman and Alderman of the 17th Ward, 16 Mrs. Shannon worked closely with her husband's political 17 office; and 18 WHEREAS, Mrs. Shannon was very close to her family, 19 raising her children and being involved in the lives of her 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and 21 WHEREAS, She was an active member at St. Elizabeth, St. 22 Carthage, and St. Dorothy Roman Catholic Churches; she and 23 her husband were godparents of Wilton Gregory and encouraged 24 him in his life in the Roman Catholic Church; he is now the 25 most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Bishop of Belleville, 26 Illinois; and 27 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Shannon was a member of several 28 organizations, including the Classy Apex Social Club, the Top 29 Ladies of Distinction, the Burkites (Edmond Burke Elementary 30 School Alumnus), and the Hoe Downer and Chi Squares; and -2- LRB9113820CBcb 1 WHEREAS, She was also involved with the American Cancer 2 Society, receiving the 1969 award for distinguished services 3 as a Section Chairman in Field Service; she served as Sick 4 Committee Chairperson for the 74th Street Block Club, and 5 devoted many hours to the March of Dimes, American Red Cross, 6 Council of Catholic Women, and Chicago Park District; she 7 also volunteered at each school to help her grandchildren 8 through school; and 9 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Shannon was a loving wife, devoted 10 mother, and proud grandmother and great-grandmother; she 11 always managed to maintain a warm, loving home for her 12 family; and 13 WHEREAS, The passing of Elizabeth Shannon will be deeply 14 felt by her family and friends, especially her daughter, 15 Betty Jo Thomas-Orr Bell; her son, William H. Shannon III; 16 her son-in-law, Edward Bell; her grandchildren, Pamela F. 17 Thomas-Hall, Kenneth E. and Neil A. Thomas, William H. 18 Shannon IV, Nichole, Stephanie and Christopher Shannon, and 19 Regan and Nicole Swanigan; her great-grandchildren, Omri J. 20 Hall, Timothy, Tiia, Jordan, Jade and Julian Thomas, JaVaughn 21 and Jade Shannon, and Isaiah Rodriguez; her half-sister, Mrs. 22 Tollese Parker; and her first cousin, Evelyn V. Davis; 23 therefore, be it 24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 25 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 26 we note with sorrow and regret the death of R. Elizabeth 27 Shannon and extend our sincere condolences to her family and 28 friends; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 30 presented to the family of R. Elizabeth Shannon.
